Blinds (curtains) pleated: description, varieties, comparison, application

Sh

torahs made of pleated fabric remain one of the most modern and demanded ways of decorating windows. Pleated blinds are a sophisticated combination of classic curtains and a special fastening profile. When unfolded, the canvas looks spectacular and stylish, and when folded, the guide threads fold it into a horizontal accordion.

Pleated curtains

Features of pleated curtains

Pleated curtains will help create a comfortable level of privacy, adjust the degree of natural light, protect from the scorching sun's rays and, which is also important, stylish, fashionable and beautifully decorate a window or use it for zoning a space.

Probably, many, sitting in a boring lesson at school, began to crumple a sheet of paper from a notebook into an accordion, unfolding it into a fan or folding it into intricate shapes. So such a paper accordion is the fundamental design of these curtains. But unlike a notebook sheet, their canvas is much larger, has guides and is equipped with a lifting-lowering system.

From a technical point of view, pleated curtains are blinds made of pleated material, fixed on both sides in a special profile cornice.

Like all lifting models, they consist of three main parts:

  1. Profile (aluminum, plastic, wood).
  2. Canvases (fabric, PVC, paper).
  3. Control mechanism (manual, mechanical or remote).

They are held on the glass by means of guides, which are strings stretched between the upper and lower strips of the cornice. The guides go through all the folds, making them very convenient to close and open. The depth of folds in different species varies from 1.5 cm to 6 cm.

In the raised state, the accordion blinds are practically invisible, and in general the whole structure does not take up much window space. And for the convenient control of pleated curtains on dormers or on ceiling glazing, manufacturers have developed a special rod mechanism.

When open, a pleated curtain on a window can completely close a window or even a doorway, and when closed, it will shrink into a compact briquette no more than 4-5 cm thick.

It is also convenient that such a pleated curtain on a plastic window can be fixed at any level - top, bottom, middle or indented, allowing the owner to comfortably adjust the degree of illumination and privacy. The photo of pleated curtains above shows ways of fixing them at different levels.

For example, when curtains are needed mainly to protect against the draft and sun of flowers on the windowsill, it will be enough to lower the profile to the middle of the opening height and open it downward. In this case, the room will be bright, since the upper part of the glazing will remain open.

The lifting mechanism for this type of curtain can be either manual or automatic using an electric drive. Manual control involves the use of latches that lock the "accordion" at the desired height, while the use of an electric drive allows you to adjust the position of the blinds remotely, from the remote control or using a stationary mounted switch on the wall.

Plisse can be purchased in stores ready-made, created for standard plastic frames, or contact specialized firms and make it to order, with a specific shape and size. The latter is relevant when it comes to arched, triangular or dormer windows that initially have an unconventional design.

Pleated curtains can be used to decorate a window of any configuration, not hiding, but emphasizing its non-standard shape. Moreover, even when mounted on arched windows, they will function: open and close. In this respect, such curtains are one of a kind.

What is the most reliable fastening method

In principle, a pleated curtain is a pleated (corrugated) material, from two edges and held by profile cornices. One of them is stationary, the second is mobile.

For a more reliable and accurate fastening of the structure, side profiles are also used, inside which strings are stretched through the curtain. It is clear that the more complex the design, the more problematic is the repair of pleated curtains.

Practice has shown that the most reliable and aesthetic way of fastening is screwing the eaves onto the frame with self-tapping screws. Neither wooden nor profile-aluminum (hollow inside) window frame suffers from this at all.

Advantages and disadvantages of pleated blinds separately and in comparison with other blinds

The secret of the stable popularity of accordion curtains among buyers lies in their versatility resulting from a well-thought-out design and giving this type of window decoration many advantages.

Among them I would like to note the following:

  1. Ease of use.
  2. Ease of installation.
  3. Possibility of installation on non-standard frames.
  4. Durability.
  5. Stylish design.
  6. Easy care.
  7. Variety of models.

Of the objective shortcomings of this window decor, only its high price can be noted. Finished products made from quality materials are much more expensive than any other blinds.

Compared to roller blinds

Structurally, pleated curtains and roller blinds are brothers. Their only difference is that some have a smooth surface, while others have an accordion. Therefore, in cases where it is not required to decorate a window of a complex shape, the appropriate option should be chosen only based on aesthetic preferences and financial capabilities.

Compared to smooth ascetic rolls, pleated curtains in the interior look more cozy and "homey". And what is also important - such paper or fabric blinds can be selected for any interior design, but they look especially impressive, in high-tech style, minimalism (pictured below), Japanese and loft.

In addition, the roller blind should definitely be preferred when you want to decorate the window with a decor with photo printing. Their surface is perfectly flat and even a complex poster looks perfect on it. And, on the contrary, when plotting a plot picture on an "accordion" base, the image "breaks" in numerous folds and looks unaesthetic. In this regard, the application of 3D photo printing with various plots on the pleated, although it becomes possible, but still an unjustified financial waste.

Compared to horizontal blinds

If we compare pleated blinds with horizontal blinds, the choice in favor of the former will be due, first of all, to the practical component - the latter have such unpleasant moments as:

  • frequent breakdowns and crushing of the lamellas, leading to the inevitable loss of a presentable appearance;
  • gaps that do not give a comfortable feeling of "fencing off" from the outside world.

Pleated fabrics are completely devoid of these drawbacks, since they are made of a single piece. There are no gaps on it and there is simply nothing to break in it.

Compared to vertical blinds

Vertical blinds also have their pros and cons, but it will not be entirely correct to compare them, since pleated blinds and vertical blinds have "different audiences": the former are mostly mounted on the sashes, and the latter are mounted above the window opening along its entire width.

With horizontal folds

From the outside, such pleated curtains look exactly like blinds, but they do not have individual slats, only a continuous piece of material that is gathered into a neat accordion by a tension mechanism. A professionally assembled design will cost more than conventional curtains, but the effect is amazing!

Varieties of pleated blinds

As mentioned above, the range of these unique blinds is extremely wide. They vary in shape, material of manufacture, type of control, but still the main criterion for their choice is design features. Consider all varieties.

By design

By this parameter, the following main types can be distinguished:

  • Free-hanging pleated curtains. They are not fixed at the bottom, and therefore will sag on the folding frames. They are installed on windows that are not equipped with a swing-out mechanism for ventilation.

  • Stretched. They are fixed in the lower part, so they can be used on windows with hinged frames.

  • Reinforced tension. Thanks to the side guides, they adhere evenly to the glass over its entire surface. It is advisable to install such blinds on frames with a large angle of inclination, for example, on roof windows.

  • With reinforced tension and cable. They are used for rooms with ceiling windows or in conservatories.

  • Pleated curtains from bottom to top. Such a system is equipped with movable cornices from below and from above. This makes it possible to leave a gap both from below or from above, as well as from below and from above at the same time.

  • Day-Night System. Twin structures, consisting of two canvases with different opacity. As a rule, it is dense fabric for night time and translucent for daytime.

Pleated stretch curtains on a movable cornice controlled by a handle, if necessary, can be turned upside down and installed so that when the glazing is closed, the curtain does not go down from above, but rises from below. This solution will be ideal for installation on first floor windows. Likewise, you can change the location of tissues in the "Day-Night" system.

As you can see, there are suitable options for every taste and occasion.

By fastening method

Methods for attaching pleated curtains to plastic windows also suggest several options:

  • on frame glazing bead;
  • on the frame itself;
  • inside the window opening;
  • on the opening to the wall;
  • to the ceiling.

Often, one model can be fixed in different ways to choose from, for example, on an opening to a wall or to a ceiling. That is, our task is to choose the most suitable one.

The planks are fixed using self-tapping screws, hanging brackets or on an adhesive base. When choosing paper products, you can do without a cornice altogether, and fix them with double-sided tape. Such budget paper self-adhesive solutions can be used as temporary, during the renovation process or after it, until the purchase of a permanent version of window curtains. In the direction of opening folds

According to the opening of the folds and, accordingly, the sliding of the pleated blinds mechanism, the blinds can be divided into two more varieties:

  1. With horizontal pleats.
  2. With vertical arrangement of pleats.

With the horizontal opening of folds, everything is clear, since this type of decor is widespread, but vertical pleated blinds are still conquering the market and are not so common.

Pleated curtains with vertical pleats.

Vertical pleated blinds are not installed on semicircular windows. They are mainly used on standard sash designs and as retractable, assembled partitions that move in the upper and lower skids. Such a partition for zoning space into functional sectors is convenient, compact and, if desired, mobile. The main limitation of its use can be only one thing - the dimensions, which should be agreed with the manufacturer.

Another application of vertical pleated curtains is a mosquito net. Such a partition to protect against mosquitoes and midges will come in handy in a private house or in an open gazebo. The video below shows an example of such mosquito protection.

By material of manufacture

Curtain rods for curtains of this type are made of plastic and aluminum, and the fabrics themselves are made of fabric and paper.

Pleated fabric curtains are the most common. Their assortment is extremely wide. They can be completely opaque, darkening, almost transparent. A wide selection of colors and textures allows you to find a suitable solution for any interior. Thanks to all kinds of impregnations, their properties are also varied: fire resistance, moisture resistance, antistatic properties, they can be used in rooms for various functional purposes.

The origin of the fabric can also be very different: from natural or artificial fibers, silk curtains, cotton, polyester (for example, Ikea shottis blinds), shantung and even bamboo. And recently, pleated blackout curtains with one hundred percent shading have become popular.

Shottis blinds from IKEA (pictured above) made of 100% polyester are an excellent solution for those who want to decorate the interior in a budget, practical and beautiful way. Due to the composition of the fabric, they are suitable for use in all rooms, but such pleated curtains are especially appropriate for the kitchen and bathroom.

Sometimes accordion designs are made of thick paper rather than fabric. Pleated paper blinds look quite decent, but they are not suitable for rooms with high humidity and are not durable. Their main advantage is their affordable cost compared to fabric products. With them, you can often change the decor of windows without special material costs, giving the interior of the room a new look. It is also convenient that screws and a drill are not needed for their installation; installation is carried out on double-sided adhesive tape.

Classic corrugation.

Multi-layer corrugation.

Another novelty on the market is corrugated curtains. They can be both fabric and paper, have two or more layers and are also suitable for installation on non-standard and arched windows. Their main difference lies in the "honeycomb" structure of the canvas. Thanks to the honeycomb, the tension threads remain hidden inside, are not striking, and the corrugated curtains as a whole look stylish and elegant.

This structure gives them excellent thermal insulation qualities: the honeycomb traps the air inside itself, thereby creating a heat-conducting membrane. The two canvases are connected along fold lines, forming symmetrical compartments. If you look from the side, you can see that their shape is diamond-shaped. Since the pleated pleats are at least double, they protect from sunlight twice as well, and in the heat they allow you to keep the air temperature several degrees lower.

By type of control

Control of pleated blinds and blinds of the same type. Their lifting mechanism also has special chains, handles and laces for control and can also be equipped with an electric drive, due to which the blades are set in motion remotely. Its main options are:

  1. Cord. This control is carried out by almost invisible cords (cords) that come out of the top profile from the front and side. It can also be combined: one cord lifts the accordion up, the other lowers it down. The Day-Night models have separate cords for each canvas.
  2. Electric motor. Pleated blinds with an electric drive are not cheap. Their choice is justified in cases where there are a lot of canvases or they are installed in hard-to-reach places, for example, at high heights. The controls supplied with the motor allow you to open and close them, both individually and in groups. The most expensive designs are equipped with a switch with a timer that can be programmed, for example, for the morning when you need to wake up.
  3. Leash handle. This type of control is practiced only in tensioned systems and is recommended when assembling pleats on opening sashes. The leash handle is attached to the lower profile and allows you to quickly and accurately raise, lower or move the blinds to the required height and fix them in the desired position. There are 2 handles for the Day-Night varieties - one for each canvas. When installed in hard-to-reach places or at high heights, the pleated curtain is equipped with a control bar - an extension cord with an adjustable access angle of 1.00, 1.50 and 2.00 m in length.
  4. Crank. This is a convenient way to control ceiling-mounted or high-rise structures. Crank is a handle made of aluminum or durable plastic in lengths of 1, 00, 1.50 and 2, 00 m. It works the same way as a pen. To do this, it is attached to a special socket on the lower profile and rotated around the axis, thus activating the gearbox.

Main characteristics

  • For the manufacture of pleated curtains, environmentally friendly materials (polyester, polyester) are used, which have a different texture, density and design.
  • All fabrics are treated with a special antistatic impregnation, which makes the blinds resistant to fading and dirt.
  • Some fabrics are able to effectively reflect the sun's rays and prevent the air from heating up in the apartment due to a special reflective metallized coating.
  • The width of the curtains can be from 0.25 to 2.80 meters. Their maximum height is 4.00 meters. The average width of the folds is 15 millimeters.
  • The components are made of plastic, anodized aluminum and steel.
  • The profile and fittings have four classic colors: white, brown, bronze, silver. The profile can be painted in any other color.

How to properly care for pleated curtains

  • In order for the curtains, including fabric and paper pleated curtains, to serve for a long time, it is necessary to take care of them and properly care for both the fabric itself and the control mechanism.
  • Fabric care depends on the type of fabric. Oddly enough, it is easiest to care for pleated curtains in the kitchen, and all because they are made of a material covered with moisture-resistant and antistatic impregnations. They do not require any special approach - it is enough to periodically wipe them with a soft damp cloth.
  • Reflective coated products require careful maintenance. To clean them, the fabric will have to be removed from the guides and soaked in a detergent solution with a water temperature of 30 ° C for about an hour and a half, then rinsed with clean water from the shower.
  • To remove excess liquid from the curtains, they need to be folded and unfolded several times. Ironing such curtains is strictly prohibited.
  • Drying is recommended away from direct sunlight, fire and heating appliances when folded. To prevent the folds from sticking together, they are periodically opened until they are completely dry.

Roof windows

Attic windows are most often of non-standard shape, so it is impossible to hang classic curtains on them. Pleated blinds are mounted without problems, moreover, they do not take away a centimeter of scarce space.

Due to their small size and weight, these curtains can be attached at any angle. When the canvas is tilted, the side strips are fixed. For control, special bars or leashes are mounted - these are such handles.

Design Tips

Such curtains will be an excellent solution for both an apartment and a country house. They look best in minimalist interiors such as hi-tech, loft, techno, minimalism. But this does not mean at all that they cannot be used in other styles. Can. The main thing is to choose the right colors and, if possible, combine with curtains or tulle.

The functionality of these unique curtains: a wide selection of colors and textures of fabrics used for their manufacture, all kinds of impregnations that increase the quality of the fabric, a convenient lifting mechanism allow them to be used in interiors of different functionality.

Kitchen

It is better to choose pleated curtains for the kitchen from polyester or a mixed fabric with a dirt-repellent and antistatic coating. In this room, they are also convenient in that they save space and leave the window sill free. Drawings can be chosen in accordance with personal preferences or abandoned altogether, keeping in mind the relationship of color and composition to form appetite.

Particularly convenient for the kitchen are stretch "double pleated" with simultaneous adjustment of the upper and lower positions or "Day-night", fixed on the shutters. Pleated blinds on plastic windows of the photo, which are presented above, save space and leave the window sill completely free.

It is convenient to decorate balcony doors with pleated curtains in the kitchen. They can be decorated with both short structures, which cover only their glass parts, and long ones, which cover the doors along their entire height. Thanks to its sleek minimalism, this design never looks bulky.

Pleated curtains in the kitchen, combined with the living room, spacious, with panoramic windows, it is better to hang on all the glazing, and not visually crush it with several canvases. This design looks aesthetically pleasing and presentable at the same time.

If the size of the room allows you not to think about using the window sill, such curtains can be installed in the opening for its entire width. It is advisable to use the "Up and Down" options, allowing you to open that part of the window, the penetration of light from which will be most convenient for each time of day.

Living room or hall

At their core, pleated curtains are another type of blinds. To some, they may seem too laconic for the living room. In fact, with the right approach, both horizontal and vertical pleated blinds look no less cozy than classic curtains.

Pleated curtains on plastic windows are perfectly combined with classic curtains, they play the role of light filters. These two types of window decorations look very good in tandem and complement each other.

The living room, as a rule, does not require complete shading, so two types of curtain curtains can be combined in it. Translucent blinds and delicate tulle silk curtains look very gentle together, airy and visually add volume to a small room.

For windows in the living room, it is advisable to select a monochromatic design. In this room, and so it is necessary to place a lot of decorative accessories and functional items and prints on the decor, which is characterized by a large number of folds on which the play of light and shadow constantly takes place, will make the interior heavier.

For a delicate interior, not overloaded with details and accessories, it is quite acceptable to choose products with an unobtrusive print.

This photo is a clear proof that such window decoration is suitable not only for minimalist, but classic "rustic" interiors such as Provence, Scandinavian, country or shabby chic. The main thing is to correctly place accents and choose a color.

For bathroom

In the bathroom, this decor looks more than appropriate.Naturally, given the high humidity of this room, you need to choose models with moisture-resistant impregnation and pleated paper blinds will not work here.

The original appearance, compactness, unpretentiousness in care make these blinds an ideal option for a bathroom, regardless of its size and interior style.

With accordion canvases in the bathroom, you can decorate not only the window, but also the niche under it. In such a niche it will be convenient to store all kinds of household supplies and household chemicals.

In the case when the bathroom is designed in an attic with non-standard windows, which you want not to hide, but to emphasize, pleats become the only possible option for a functional decor.

For bedroom

The bedroom periodically needs complete blackout. Pleated curtains, especially if they are made of light-blocking blackout fabric, perform this function perfectly. And if you choose a product with an electric drive and a programmable timer, you do not even have to get out of bed in order to raise the canvases after waking up and let the light into the room.

Day-night constructions (pictured), which can be moved to different positions depending on the time of day, will create the desired level of illumination in the bedroom, even during the day. For a sound and comfortable sleep, it is advisable to choose canvases of calm, not flashy colors.

The vintage beauty of arched windows should not be hidden under curtains that hide their semicircular shape. Pleated pleats specially designed for such openings will be the ideal solution in this case.

In a bedroom with several windows, decor made from partner fabrics, for example, plain and with a print, looks good. It should be borne in mind that it is advisable to choose the pictures dim, as if blurry, not "breaking" in numerous folds.

For the bedroom, neutral, pastel colors are best. The combination of pleated and plain tulle will add peace, aesthetics and comfort to her atmosphere.

Blackout pleated curtains in dark color will become an accent spot in the interior. They are usually plain and look great against the background of patterned wallpaper. And their combination with light curtains will add coziness and comfort to the atmosphere of the room.

For the nursery

Pleated fabrics are used in the nursery more and more every year. There are several objective reasons for this. First, as has been said more than once, the fabric used for their manufacture is processed with special compounds during the production process. After processing, it acquires anti-static, dust-repellent properties, which are simply irreplaceable in the nursery. Secondly, the lifting models are located high above the floor, so that the child will not be able to reach them and harm himself. And thirdly, you can choose the right option for a child of any gender and age.

Bright, cheerful colors are welcome in the room where the teenager lives. The main emphasis in this case can be made on the windows.

Pleated blinds are not the best canvas for photo printing. But in the nursery they look very pretty. The main thing is to choose a pattern that will not get lost in the numerous accordion folds.

There is no need for pitch darkness in the newborn's room. A compact, softly diffusing light, pleated curtain made of translucent curtain fabric is suitable here. It will be an excellent replacement for classic tulle and, unlike it, will not collect dust on its surface.

For balcony and loggia

Most balconies and loggias cannot boast of large sizes and choosing curtains for them is not an easy task. They should become effective protection from the scorching sunlight if the balcony faces the south side, and if the balcony faces the north, protect its internal space from prying eyes, without shading and in both cases, do not overload the interior. These requirements are best met by lifting structures, and pleated blinds among them.

When the loggia faces the sunny side, the best solution for it will be fabric products with a reflective metallized coating. Thanks to them, a comfortable air temperature will be maintained both on the balcony and in the room.

For ease of use, it is better to arrange each sash on the balcony glazing separately. It is also the most compact and space-saving unit.

Remember that the balcony is visible from the adjoining room, so it is better to decorate it in neutral shades. If you have chosen a bright decor for the balcony, its colors should overlap with the main colors of the interior of the adjacent room.

It would seem that in interior design, especially in its part concerning window decoration, everything was invented, invented a long time ago, and it is no longer possible to create something radically new and unusual. But pleated curtains with their appearance refuted these skeptical sentiments and opened up a wide scope for designers to create and generate new ideas. In most interior solutions, they look stylish, dignified, modern, and their advantages are indisputable.

Arched windows

Arcuate openings are decorated with fan pleats. This unusual design favorably emphasizes the vault in both bedrooms and kitchens. Such an assembly cannot be sliding, it is always stationary, but at the same time it does not visually make the window heavier and does not interfere with the penetration of light from the street. On the contrary, with its help you can organize the desired highlighting of natural light.

Examples in the interior

In the photos presented in the catalogs of manufacturers, pleats are mainly used for non-standard windows. Thus, it is possible to emphasize the features of the architectural design of the building, without hiding them under the classic curtains. With the use of bright monochromatic or colored canvases, windows become an accent in the interior.

Such design options are optimal if the wall decoration is designed in a minimalist style. Pleated in neutral shades are universal and suitable for rooms, regardless of the direction of their design. The choice of color also depends on the level of light transmission. Light canvases scatter sunlight, protect from ultraviolet radiation. Black curtains provide complete privacy. The day / night model allows both options to be combined.

Subtleties of choice

When choosing curtains, they are guided by the size and shape of the window, wishes regarding the transparency of the canvas. The design is also taken into account: manufacturers produce models in pleated and honeycomb versions. The second will provide a more comfortable indoor climate.

Depending on the interior design and purpose of the room, there are plain and colored pleated canvases. The curtain can be made of paper or fabric, provide for manual or electric control when opening. Some models do not provide for position control during operation.

Dimensions (edit)

If you make pleated blinds to order, then the dimensions are set by you yourself. They will depend on the type of window, its size and the type of blinds that you want to install on your chosen window. But for pleated curtains, there are minimum and maximum sizes:

For vertical installation and angles up to 15 degrees:

Minimum width 20 cmMinimum height 220 cm
Maximum height 20 cmMaximum height 260 cm

For vertical installation and an angle of up to 15 degrees, electrical control:

Minimum width 70 cmMinimum height 220 cm
Maximum height 20 cmMaximum height 260 cm

For vertical installation of circular blinds: Maximum radius 75 cm.

For tilted installation and angles up to 90 degrees:

Minimum width 30 cmMinimum height 150 cm
Maximum height 20 cmMaximum height 400 cm

For inclined installation and angles up to 90 degrees, electric control:

Minimum width 60 cmMinimum height 150 cm
Maximum height 20 cmMaximum height 400 cm

Cleaning instructions

  1. Remove the blinds from the windows.
  2. Take a container that is wider than the curtains. Add a non-bleaching detergent to the water.
  3. Fold the canvas and dip it into the water.
  4. Rinse the curtain under the shower.
  5. It is better to dry the curtain folded.
  6. After complete drying, you can fix the curtain back.

In modern times, pleated blinds are a very popular type of curtain; they can be fitted into any room, even with the most unusual design solution. A huge variety of fabrics, textures and colors is the main advantage of these blinds.
