How to make blinds - the most successful ideas and designs with your own hands (65 photos)

Home / Design & Interior / Decorative things from old blinds

Not so long ago, blinds were perhaps the most popular way to protect windows from sunlight and percussion gaze. But today they are gradually going out of fashion and most owners have them. Do not throw them away as they are great material for creativity.

Many housewives were able to come up with hundreds of options where old blinds can be adapted, and what can be made of them with their own hands without any difficulties and tricks.

New life for old blinds: an excellent master class

Blinds are installed on a window of a specific size. And if you suddenly decide to move, or hang new curtains, most likely the old blinds will no longer be useful. In addition, the blinds can bend or break, making them uncomfortable to use. But the author of the master class decided to make them a curtain of the original design, and the result pleased her.
To breathe new life into old blinds, you will need:

  • PVA glue;
  • scissors;
  • dimity;
  • brush or sponge;
  • iron;
  • roulette;
  • pen or marker;
  • clothespins;
  • paper or blanket (spread on the floor)

Carefully cut the threads connecting the blinds. You need to leave the seamy side intact as it will come in handy in a new curtain.

Measure the height of your future curtain, and remove excess trims. You need to leave a few pieces evenly spaced along the entire length.

Excess planks can be removed by breaking off their edges. Remove them very carefully so as not to damage the threads.

Spread the fabric right side out on the floor, placing what is left of the blinds on top of it. There should be 2-3 centimeters of fabric around the edges.

Fold the fabric, and iron the edges. Leave hem allowances at the bottom and top as well.

Cut off excess fabric.

To make the new curtain look neater, remove the fastening plugs and glue them with a cloth. To do this, you will need to make small cuts in the corners.

Thoroughly coat the fabric and guides with PVA glue. Glue the fabric to the frame and secure it with clothespins.

Glue the bottom edge of the fabric.

Don't remove your clothespins until your curtain is completely dry.

The curtain can be hung on the window. It looks more comfortable than conventional blinds. And you can choose any shade and pattern.

Spectacular side table - an interior touch created from available materials

If desired, everyone can have their own piece of glamor. The parts you need can be found at your regular hardware store. They will definitely not be expensive, but as a result they will look like a million. Take a look at the spectacular backlit side table. Having learned about what it is made of, you will see how impossible it is.

To implement the idea you will need:

  • 2 metal waste paper baskets of suitable shape
  • several openwork napkins
  • suitable dish
  • self-adhesive
  • glue
  • spray paint
  • LED garlands

Turning over one of the baskets, apply glue around the entire perimeter of the bottom.

We take several napkins with the pattern we like and fix them to the basket using cable ties. It is important to smooth the napkins as you work to ensure the best fit possible.

Docking the napkins together, close the entire rack. We simply cut off the excess rubber sheet.

Cover the rack with a suitable metallic spray paint and let dry completely.

We use any suitable dish as a table top. First, apply it to an inverted sheet of self-adhesive and circle it. Using a stack or spatula, we go in a circle under the side, trying to push the paper to mark the inner circle.

Cut out a circle of the required size from the self-adhesive.

We cover the edges of the dish with paint of the selected color, let it dry, and then glue the self-adhesive from the inside.

We fix the garlands inside the rack. If necessary, draw out the cord. Then it remains only to place the countertop on top and put the appropriate decor on the table.

More details regarding the manufacture of a table, as well as other interesting ideas regarding the creation of interior decor, in the video below:

Blinds as a finishing material

If the blinds have a special frame, then this is an excellent finishing material. Of course, blinds come in different sizes and colors, but this is exactly what we need. In order to create a unique design of the living room, you can use just old blinds.

They can decorate the wall, and collect different pieces of color and size, like a mosaic. The result is a unique wall that will be difficult to recreate even with all the desire. There can be a lot of fastening options, but the easiest way is to get by with construction glue or liquid nails. With them, the installation process will be as fast and simple as possible, and the installation process will be similar to assembling an exciting puzzle. Due to the fact that the weight of the blinds is not so large, even a fragile girl can cope with such a responsible job.

Blinds tapes - second life

I use it as directed.

Oh, girls, I broke my head thinking where to attach the tapes from the window blinds. You go to the store. blinds on the windows. In the office. jalousie. The hospital also has blinds on the windows. You come home. Oh no! I don’t want my house to resemble a shop, a hospital, a job. She tore everything from the windows! Well, where is all this now? And for its intended purpose. in raw materials for needlework!

At first I used it as an auxiliary material: I would attach the wings for a bee, then a rigid insert for something that is too hard for sewing. I remembered that when soaked, the tapes become soft like fabric. Idea! First, I'll open it, then soak it in water, blot it with a napkin and immediately under the sewing machine! Beauty! And it turns out easily. Without letting it dry, I fill it with holofiber, but it is better with a sintepon, so that it is tighter and sewn by hand where required. First I tried it on simple products, and then, I think it will be something more complicated. When dry, they become tough again, but this only gives the product its zest.

Jewelry stand

Known options for bamboo blinds, which simply fold at the top of the window, like a rug for making rolls. If there are old blinds of such a plan, then they can be used as a unique display stand for decorations. If a girl loves not only gold and silver, but also jewelry, then such a stand will allow her to quickly pick up certain earrings and necklaces for a particular outfit, and not spend several hours searching and trying on. The stand can be made in such sizes that will fit into the dimensions and interior of the room. You can shorten the blinds using the most ordinary kitchen scissors.

It would be best to hang the stand not far from the mirror so that the girl can immediately pick up jewelry not only for outfits, but also for the upcoming makeup.

Material selection

Depending on the purpose - decor, high-quality shading, minimal window shading - different types of materials are chosen:

  • textile. It can be natural (cotton, linen, silk, mixed fabrics, synthetics) of various density, texture and color;
  • high-quality thick paper on a fabric or non-woven backing. In fact, this is a roll wallpaper or their analogue;
  • composite materials - a mat, a mat made of straw, bamboo, thin strips and others.

For the sunny side, where high-quality protection from direct rays and heat is required, dense materials are preferred, including multi-layer ones. When planning to use paper rolls, it is important to remember that with active exposure to ultraviolet radiation, they can quickly lose their density and strength, the same applies to the action of moisture.

Elegant mixed fabrics of light structure are suitable for window decoration.

Screen for a photo shoot

But the most valuable are long blinds, which are equipped with a decorative frame. They definitely should not be thrown away. The thing is that from them you can create a unique screen for a photo shoot or just for dressing up. Surely you have repeatedly seen in old films how there are screens in the rooms, behind which a girl can calmly change clothes, without prying eyes at her figure. This is exactly the option you can do yourself.

Only four frames and six small hinges are required for manufacturing. We fasten each of the frames with the subsequent ones using two loops. One should be located at a distance of ten centimeters from the bottom, and the other loop at the same distance, only from the top. When the whole structure is assembled, it can be installed vertically. Due to the hinges, the angle of rotation of each individual door can be adjusted.

You can additionally decorate such a screen with flower arrangements or any other options that can laconically fit into the finished interior.

Cute pots from an unnecessary tin can

Probably the phrase "from trash to treasure" at least once caught the eye of everyone. For example, you can make such original and funny pots from empty cans.

All that remains is to plant flowers in them! Such crafts, in turn, will not only decorate your home or plot, but will also contribute, albeit small, to the fight against pollution of our planet.

You will need:

  • cans;
  • self-hardening mass;
  • planks;
  • twine;
  • paints

The first step is to prepare the jar for work: for this, wash it well and dry it.

When the spout and handle of the kettle are ready and hardened, glue them to the tin can. It is best to do this using the same mass, so you can not only glue, but also "build" them into the jar, and then all parts of the teapot will look like a single whole.

When the handle and spout are securely attached to the can, you can start painting. The first layer should be painted over with white dense paint - it will serve as a kind of primer that will reliably mask the pattern on the tin can. Apply the next layer of paint of the selected color. Finally, the final touch is some kind of glitter paint, you can just apply it with your finger.

When the paint is dry, you can decorate the watering can, for example, with artificial flowers from foamiran.

We make the suspension for the pots from a regular board. We cut the board to the required size and paint if desired. Then we screw special loops into the board and fix the twine on them. We fasten or glue the "watering can" to the resulting suspension. Done, all that remains is to plant flowers in these lovely pots!

And below you can watch a video on how to make a pots in the form of a watering can from a tin can.

What can be done from old blinds with your own hands: photo examples

Used blinds become unnecessary when replacing windows that do not fit, and can simply deteriorate or get bored. Do not rush to part with them, if you wish, you can give a second life to any old things. And many of the ideas presented in the photo below can be realized with your own hands.

By removing the extra plates, you will get Roman shades from the blinds.

And by stenciling the pattern, you can freshen up boring white ribbons.

Non-standard application: bath screen.

This will cover the niche under the sink.

Tired of contemplating the blinds on the window, move it to the wall as a decorative panel.

We make blinds in 1 evening: 3 master classes for the creative and resourceful

If buying new blinds does not fit into your plans or budget, but you have one free evening and a charge of creative inspiration, then we suggest that you make blinds yourself using available means.

We have compiled 2 step-by-step master classes on how to make blinds with your own hands and 1 master class on how to update and beautifully decorate horizontal blinds.

Do it yourself

If you can't wait to change something in your home, but not enough money for repair or purchase of new interior items, you have come to the right address!
we prepared for you an amazing rework idea old blindsthat delights. After all, you can make wonderful Roman blinds from them that will delight the eye!

Master class number 1: Blinds-pleated wallpaper

You can make such paper blinds in just a couple of hours, and if you still have wallpaper after renovation, then you don't even have to go to the store. The pleated blinds will last for about a year, and then you can simply make new ones, because that way is so simple, beautiful and economical. And paper blinds are great for decorating the windows of country houses and joint creativity with children.

To make blinds from wallpaper as in the photo above, you will need:

  1. A roll of paper wallpaper (only paper wallpapers are suitable, since vinyl and non-woven ones cannot gather in an accordion);
  2. Auxiliary materials: scissors or stationery cutter, ruler, pencil;
  3. Awl or hole punch (an awl is better);
  4. Rope longer than the height of the window and 5-7 mm thick or a thin satin ribbon;
  5. Retainer with end piece of a suitable color;
  6. If desired, two more tapes of any width and length 2.5 times the height of the window. These ribbons are only needed for decoration;
  7. Double-sided tape (or glue) and Velcro to match the wallpaper, if you want to make curtains with a "swag" around the edge.

  1. First you need to cut off a piece of wallpaper of the required length at the rate of: window height + 30 cm. Then you need to assemble the canvas in an accordion. You can do this by eye, but pleating will be more accurate if you pre-lined the wallpaper from the back into strips 2.5-3 cm wide.A ruler will help you to bend the wallpaper exactly, and a pencil or pen will help you iron and fix the folds.
  2. Now the resulting accordion from the wallpaper needs to be assembled, measured and marked in the middle on the first "lamella" and a through hole made in this place using an awl. You can also use a hole punch, but then the holes will have to be made in parts and the holes will turn out not in the middle of the "lamellas", but a little closer to the edge, but they will be more accurate and wide. Next, we take the rope and lead it through the entire accordion. If the rope is synthetic, then its tip can be burned a little to make it sharp, then it will be easier to thread the rope through the holes.
  3. The end of the rope on the first top "lamella" must be tied into a knot so that it does not slip out of the hole, and the end itself can be either left to tie the curtains to the cornice, or cut if you want to glue and attach the curtains directly to the window frame.
  4. At this stage, you can also glue a solid base to the first lamella, for example, cardboard, a plastic corner or a thin strip, in order to use it to hang the blinds on the windows.
  5. On the lower end of the rope (at the bottom of the curtains) we put on a retainer and assemble our curtains to the desired level. Now we glue the Velcro on the right and left ends of the wallpaper using glue or double-sided tape, then glue these Velcro and ... woo-ala! We get pleated blinds with a "swag".
  6. Finally, we attach our curtains to the window.
  • If you want to make horizontal blinds without a swag, then you need to make through holes in two places, as shown in the picture on the right. And, of course, in this case either two ropes or one long one will be required. And to make the horizontal blinds more interesting, you can decorate them with ribbons, which, moreover, will hide the ropes and fix the curtains at the desired level. An example of such a decor, see the photo below.

  • Instead of a retainer, you can use a button of a suitable size with two or three holes as shown in the photo below.

  • Of course, each accordion blank can be cut to width. But, as a rule, wallpapers of a standard width of 53-55 cm are quite suitable for a standard window. But if you need more blinds, then you can choose a wallpaper with a width of 1 m.

And here is a selection of photos of different ideas for your inspiration.

Horizontal

Horizontal systems are the classic look. They are also called Venetian. I make them from small plates, 2 to 5 cm wide.

Horizontal curtains protect the room from sunlight by 95%. They are installed both for home and office.

Their principle of operation is that the plates are located horizontally. They can be deployed using a special lever. Thus, some light will enter the room. You can also lift the blade up completely.

Paper pleated semicircle

This type does not consist of individual stripes, but of a whole canvas, which is folded into folds. They can also be lifted up manually or using a remote control. Such curtains are installed in apartments, restaurants, hotels.

Necessary materials

Flesilin wallpaper is chosen as the main material. They will keep the given shape. They also allow light to pass through. The width is chosen depending on the size of the window. The length is measured 30-40 cm longer than the window opening. You will also need:

  • awl or hole punch;
  • scissors;
  • simple pencil;
  • rope that matches the wallpaper;
  • a rope clamp, use a small bead or other similar object;
  • glue;
  • Scotch;
  • two slats made of wood, 10 by 10 cm;
  • ruler.

For such a product, not only wallpaper is chosen. A cloth is also used. A lightweight organza will do.

Instructions

To begin with, measure the length and width of the window. Mark the expected folds on the canvas with a pencil. Place marks on the right and left every 3-5 cm.

Fold the canvas into an accordion according to the marks. All lines should be straight, so it's best to use a ruler. Also, you need to keep track of the same thickness of the folds.

Punch a hole in the center of the folded structure. Pass a rope through it. Fasten the surplus on the reverse side with tape.

If your handmade paper blinds are narrow, you only need one cord. For wide, use several.

Glue double-sided tape on the top strip and attach a wooden strip. She will act as a cornice. Lower ones - fold in a fan and secure with tape.

The product clings to the cornice or window profile with double-sided tape.

Straight edge paper pleats

This type differs in that the bottom edge is not fanned. He remains straight, but despite this, it is more difficult to make them with your own hands.

Since the lower part will not be fixed, it is necessary to make it heavier. Otherwise, the curtains will not maintain their shape.

Required tools

To make paper pleats with straight edges, you will need:

  • cloth or paper;
  • ruler;
  • simple pencil;
  • scissors;
  • Scotch;
  • rope and retainer for it;
  • slats for weighting the bottom;
  • awl or hole punch.

Step-by-step instruction

On the canvas, measure 3-5 cm segments on both sides. Fold like an accordion and pierce a hole in the center. Pass a rope through it and fix it from the inside.

Fix a wooden strip on the top strip with tape. The bottom must be folded in half. Attach a second rail to this part. It is she who will make the bottom of the curtain heavier.

The finished product is attached to the cornice or window opening.

Horizontal

The structure consists of rectangular individual sections. They are attached one to two slats or ropes on both sides. The size of such systems is chosen depending on the size of the window profile.

You need to take 2-3 cm of stock, which will go beyond the glass. The cords are attached to this part.

Horizontal - are removable construction. Therefore, if they turn out to be too long, it will be possible to remove several elements. Also, they are added.

Necessary materials

Depending on the type of product, different materials will be needed. They can be: wood, plastic, aluminum or fabric.

In addition, you will need:

  • drill;
  • glue;
  • cord or rope;
  • cuts of the required length made of plastic or aluminum;
  • wooden beam;
  • fastening system;
  • grinding device;
  • surface treatment products.

Step-by-step instruction

The strips need to be prepared. For this, segments of the required length are cut from the whole canvas. The edges are sanded.

It is necessary to treat the surface, prime and varnish. Make a hole in the center with a drill. Do the same in the cornice.

Insert a ring into the hole of the cornices, which will hold the entire system. Often, one hole is not enough. Then, you need to make holes in the side parts of the structure.

In the ring of the cornice, fasten the cord and thread the elements into it. A knot is made under each segment or a part is fixed with glue. The center ropes are left loose.

To make the blinds open and close freely, a cord is threaded through the ring in the cornice of the central part and all the segments.

Vertical

This type of system differs in that the stripes are arranged vertically. They are closed not by lifting up, but by shifting to one side. Often, the products are attached specifically to the window opening, and not to the profile itself.

Thanks to this, it will be possible to open the window with the curtains closed. Structures are installed in offices, schools and other educational institutions.

In apartments, vertical systems look very harmonious and emphasize the style of the room.

Required tools

For manufacturing, you will need pieces of the required length. The cornice, on which a special system is fixed, will be mandatory. It should move all strips to one side and be reinforced with a rope or other device.

Also, take a drill and various accessories. For example, a piece of plastic or wood will be needed for fabric elements. It will make the structure heavier.

Step-by-step instruction

Holes are drilled on the upper strips, with their help the structure will be held. A cord is passed through them and fixed with glue. Thus, they can not only be fixed, but also remain mobile.

Important! The length of the cord should be 20-30 cm longer than the entire system.

Clamps are attached to the lower part. Especially if the blinds are fabric. They will allow you to make the product heavier and give it the correct shape.

Surfaces are treated with special agents before installation. The wood is varnished.

Roll

Roller blinds are easy to manufacture. They are a fabric product fixed on a roll.

To independently make such a protection, you must have basic sewing skills.

Necessary materials

To assemble blinds with your own hands, fabric is chosen from fabric, which is treated with various antibacterial agents. This will prevent large amounts of dust from accumulating.

You will need two pieces of this fabric.

DIY paper blinds

Wallpaper blinds are easy to make. Even if you are far from needlework, following our master class, you can cope with such work without any problems.

Materials for such crafts can be found in every home. You will need scissors, wallpaper, double-sided tape, an awl, tape measure, regular tape, tape, retainer, ruler, pencil, and meter.

Master class for making blinds from wallpaper:

  1. Measure the length and width of the glass portion of the window frame. Divide the glass length by 0.25. You should end up with a number 25% larger than the original length of the window - this will be the length of the curtain.
  2. Carefully cut out a rectangle from the wallpaper equal to the width of the window and the length you found.
  3. Fold the rectangle with an accordion. The width of one fold can vary by 3-5 cm. The bottom edge of the folded curtain should be facing the window.
  4. On the reverse side, in the center of all protruding corners, a hole is pierced.
  5. A rope or cord is inserted into the resulting hole. The curtain is brought to an open position. A knot is tied and the excess rope is cut off.
  6. A retainer is glued to the end of the cord. A large bead can act as a retainer.
  7. Double-sided tape is glued to the top strip of the curtain. Also, if you wish, you can stick such tape on half of the bottom strip, gluing the bottom of the blinds with a fan.
  8. The product is glued to the window frame with double-sided tape and brought into position.

Such wallpaper curtains look quite aesthetically pleasing. With proper care, they can last for several years. However, you need to understand that paper curtains will have to be changed from time to time.

Do-it-yourself Roman blinds based on blinds

Converting old curtains into new designs is always fun. In addition, such a transformation is very beneficial, since for a completely new product you will have to buy a minimum of material.

To make Roman blinds based on blinds, you will need: the blinds themselves, a piece of fabric of a suitable color, a sewing machine, scissors, liquid nails, fabric glue.

How to make new roman shades based on old blinds:

  1. The fabric is cut into a rectangle to fit the window. In this case, 10 cm must be added to the width of the segment for allowances, and to the length 20.
  2. The edges of the curtain need to be folded twice and sewn on a sewing machine.
  3. Next, we take the old blinds and carefully cut off all the beams and the lower limiter from them. The upper stopper and threads must remain intact.
  4. We glue the blinds to the back of the fabric, at the same distance. Lamellas are the basis of the folds. For curtains, 7 folds are usually enough for an average window. The lower limiter is glued to the lower edge of the canvas.
  5. The upper limiter is glued to the upper edge of the canvas, on the front part. The threads hanging from it are passed through the holes in the lamellas. The dangling ends are glued to the fabric.
  6. The top rail is decorated with fabric and the curtains are attached to the window.

In a few simple steps, you can make new roman shades from old curtains. Such curtains can be raised using a special mechanism, folding the fabric with an accordion and lowered, straightening the canvas.

How to make a rotary device

The swivel mechanism is designed to turn the segments. Thanks to this, it is possible to partially let in sunlight and fresh air.

For its manufacture, choose a suitable braid and attach it to the end side of the strips. It is necessary to pass it through a special ring in the cornice and pass it through the inside. It is required to connect the braid and secure with a latch.

The stripes will rotate depending on which end of the tape is pulled.

Roller blinds from old curtains

Even an old-fashioned French curtain can turn into a stylish and uncluttered roller blind. Converting an old curtain into such a design will amaze you with its simplicity and speed of execution.

Such a curtain can be made not only from an old curtain, but simply from two pieces of fabric.

In order to sew such a curtain, you need to cut the material into two rectangles, which will be two cm larger than the window in width and length. These rectangles are sewn on three sides like a bag on the back. The bag is turned inside out, and a bar is inserted into its horizontal seam, which is fixed by stitching the material over it.

On the back and outside of the curtain, ribbons are attached at the same level. You should have two ribbons on each side, placed vertically along the edges of the curtains.

With the help of tapes, you can fix the rolled canvas in the desired position. To attach the structure to the window, you can use a construction stapler or liquid nails.
