Curtains for arched windows: how to choose the right one (23 photos)

Hey! For a long time I gathered with my thoughts and forces to start a discussion of the endless topic of curtains. We are not Scandinavians and curtains in several layers (one thick, one light) are usually an integral attribute of the interiors of 95% of Russians. And the remaining 5% just haven't bought them yet. And if with ordinary windows everything is more or less clear (the correct length of curtains, width, suitable cornice, height of its location), then huge problems often arise with non-standard windows. Quite recently, I realized why. And now I'm even surprised how some people still manage not to spoil their arched window with curtains. How do they even manage to avoid the nightmare that the textile shops offer. But first things first.

Below the arched bend

The first option for attaching curtains is below the bend of the arch. The advantage of this arrangement of curtains is as follows:

  • They emphasize the beauty of the arch, especially if the glass is made in the form of a stained-glass window or sealed with a special film.
  • With this arrangement even with the curtains closed, there is an additional light source in the room.

You can decorate the arch with additional drapery.
In order to hang the curtains below the bends of the arch, just a straight cornice is used. If the window consists of two parts or is installed through a row of brickwork and the distance of the profiles or between the arched and straight window is large enough, an imitation of a stucco cornice can be made.

Features of arched cornices

It is equally important to choose: cornices, curtains and strings. It is on them that curtains or blinds will be hung, depending on the choice of the decor item. Which element should you prefer? It is advisable to choose those designs that can repeat the shape of the window.

By correctly choosing a curtain rod for an arched window and curtains, you can make an ordinary window opening beautiful

The advantages are most often given to profile cornices, which are mounted directly into a niche with an arch.

And due to the flexibility of the material, it is possible to bend it under the desired radius. Profiled cornices are sold in various lengths and it is possible to purchase them in any color to match the shade of the frame.

Above the arched bend

The second option is to hang the curtains above the window opening. This arrangement also has its advantages, namely:

  • The height of the ceilings visually increases, which means that the size of the room seems to be larger.
  • Opportunity completely close the window from sunlight and prying eyes.

A straight cornice is also used for this curtain arrangement. In order to emphasize the beauty of an arched window, you can use translucent fabrics or a variety of hooks.

General information

Decorating arches using this type of curtain will expand the boundaries of design ideas. The blinds are adapted to any shape of arched openings. Ceiling or wall mounting allows them to be installed in any ceiling size, allowing the designer to experiment with ceiling heights. This is an excellent solution to visually make the room more spacious. To satisfy any whims of interior decoration, you can choose classic and bold vice versa, for example, pleated curtains.

The main feature of the blinds that decorate the openings is the shape of the cornice. This element of the device must contain elasticity and strength. Good curtains should not deform, and the slats should not change their initial shape. Curtain rods for arched blinds include a reinforcing element that keeps the curtain rod itself from deformation over a long service life, which is a durable and strong structure.The cornices are made according to German technology from a special profile, which gives this product a high level of quality, which is appreciated all over the world. Almost all curtains are made from environmentally friendly materials.

The main types of blinds for window arches in shape:

  • vertical;
  • horizontal;
  • pleated.

Main material of manufacture:

  • plastic;
  • aluminum;
  • the cloth;
  • multifacture.

Along the arched bend

To position the curtains along the arched bend, you will need a special cornice, or the installation of fasteners along the radius of the window opening. This method provides the following benefits:

  • A chic and exclusive look.
  • Possibility of combining curtains fixed along an arched bend with curtains on a straight cornice located below or above the arch bend.

Lighting adjustment can be carried out using grabs or cords.

With this method of fastening, you should pay attention to the fact that the curtains will not move along the window opening.

Types of arched openings

There are several types of window arches:

  • Semi-circular or classic (the radius of curvature is equal to half the width of the opening) with a rectangular bottom - the most common option in Russia. Openings can only be semicircular without a rectangular bottom.
  • Horseshoe (or Moorish). In domestic housing construction, they are extremely rare.
  • Lancet (gothic). They are distinguished by a pointed top.
  • English (modern). Like classic openings, they have a rounded top, but not as pronounced. This form is popular for interior openings.

The arch-windows also differ in the way of opening, which influences the choice of textile design. The leaves can be hinged, one hinged, and the second blind, completely stationary or with a blind top.

Lifting curtains

A good option for decorating arched windows would be to use lifting curtains. This is a stylish and modern solution. One of the design options for arched windows is the use of Roman or roller blinds. When choosing this option for window decoration, it should be remembered that the lifting mechanism will work only until the arch begins to bend. French, English, Chinese or Austrian curtains also look good on arches.

Blinds as an interior detail

In private houses, public premises for the purpose of recreation, entertainment, elements of the classical style, Rococo and Baroque, Empire style are introduced into the interior. In accordance with fashion trends, arched windows have specific decoration details from the Foroom trademark. Such an essential detail is the blinds on arched windows of various designs:

  • by location methods;
  • closing system;
  • colors;
  • use of materials.

Of all the variety, it is necessary to select only such models that will be fully combined with the functional purpose of the object, without entering into dissonance with the general style. Vertical blinds with an arch are created using specially developed technologies. They are designed for long-term operation, so their design must be reliable. This takes into account the nuances of all kinds of deformations. The design includes a detail, the special purpose of which is to strengthen the rounded shape of the operating cornice.

Arch blinds are a design technique for arranging the decor of a room, which allows you to visually expand the size of the area, manipulate the perception of the height and length of the building. In addition to decorative purposes, these interior details are an excellent thermostat. In winter, they do not let the cold air through from the outside, and in summer they protect from the hot sun.

Application in the interior

Now we will give several examples of the design of arched windows in the interior.

Kitchen

The problem in the kitchen is the constant fumes of grease and soot. When choosing curtains, you should pay attention to this. Lush draperies with many folds and light colors: white, beige, gray should be avoided.

A good option for the kitchen would be to use pleated blinds, Roman or roller blinds.

Hall

The hall is the face of the house and its owners. This room is always in full view of guests. In the design of arched windows in the living room, it is advisable to highlight their unusualness in the interior with the help of correctly selected curtains.

A good solution would be to use a curved cornice along the arch or fasteners along its radius. The curtains can be decorated with additional draperies and tiebacks.

Bedroom

The bedroom is a place of relaxation, sleep and romance in a relationship. The difference between the bedroom and other rooms is that the curtains on the windows need constant lighting adjustment.

Brown, chocolate or golden curtains are ideal for the bedroom.

Children

Bright colors and curtains without excessive pomp are the best choice for a child's room.

For the constant presence of sunlight in the nursery, use curtains up to the arched bend in light blue or pink.

Semicircular windows: style direction

Semicircular window openings today are an innovation in the architecture of houses and attract the attention of others, however, such frames appeared many centuries ago and were considered an item of luxury and high status of the owners of the premises. Walls with semicircular windows look stylish, noble and simply attractive. It is worth noting that if the bay window is trimmed with semicircular windows, then such a decor will 100% attract the attention of others.

Especially often, such window frames are found in buildings of such styles as:

  • Romanism;
  • Russian tower;
  • Gothic;
  • Classicism;
  • Morocco;
  • Arab;
  • Modern;
  • Postmodernism.

Unfortunately, in apartments of a particularly standard type, there are not many options for where semicircular arched windows can be installed. The places of their placement were thought out even during the design of the structure, and therefore it is possible only to replace ordinary square frames with more modern and stylish ones.

Citizens prefer to experiment and install arched windows:

  • To the balcony;
  • To the loggia;
  • Bathrooms;
  • Fake;
  • On the partition between the room and the balcony.

The difference between arched windows and standard ones lies in how the decoration is carried out, as well as in the upper contour, which is not even, but semicircular or oval. The design of the window directly depends on who is the developer of the model and on the consumer. They are made of: wood, plastic.

Due to modern technologies, it is possible to manufacture rounded windows of various radii, which allows you to choose original designs.

The forms of the windows are: completely round or in the form of a porthole, in the form of a horseshoe, in the form of a half circle, an asymmetric form, in which a different radius of curvature, with a quarter of a circle. In a rectangular frame, a completely different side can be rounded, for example: side, top, part of the top, bottom. Such arched structures significantly expand the limit of possibilities regarding the design of premises, and thanks to a large assortment, you can make a choice in the direction of the most original products in shape. With the help of rounded frames, unusual architectural designs can be formed.

Types of premises

In this way, not only private houses and apartments are decorated, but also non-residential premises. Here are some guidelines for their design:

  • Office and study. It implies a strict and business style of the interior. For the decoration of arched windows in the office, it is recommended to use vertical or horizontal blinds specially made for the arched opening. From the decor, you can use roman or roller blinds. Pleated blinds look good. The main thing is that the color of the fabric is strict and not flashy. From roller blinds it is worth paying attention to day-night and with an electric drive. If you want something more magnificent, then you can take curtains with eyelets, hinges or Italian.
  • Cafe. A cozy cafe will be perfectly complemented by French, Austrian or English curtains. Roman or rolled will look appropriate. A good option would be to choose pleated blinds and an additional short (up to the windowsill) drapery on the sides of the arched opening.
  • Restaurant, banquet hall, hotel. Since the rooms are large and need an additional light source, it is best to use curtains before the arched bend. The arch can be decorated with additional drapery.
  • SPA, beauty salons. Curtains fixed along an arched bend with additional hooks and decorative elements will look beautiful.

When choosing curtains for public places, you should pay attention to the presence of a certificate of quality and fire safety.

Problem: curtain on an arched window - looking for a non-standard solution

So, you're in luck, you are the proud owner of an arched window. Personally, I can only envy, I have always dreamed of something like this, but I never had. Like any normal person, you understand that your window is unusual and, quite naturally, it seems to you that it needs the same non-standard design. After all, everything that you previously knew about curtains related to ordinary rectangular windows. What does a modern man do? That's right, typing the query "curtains on an arched window»On the Internet and looks at pictures.

I took a screenshot of what you see.

Google

Yandex

Approximately the same thing: something semicircular, repeating the shape of an arc, swag, skirts, frill, drapery. The view can be embarrassing at first, but there is nowhere to go, you have to hide from the sun.

Then you will go to the textile salon, where the curtain designer (they came up with all these incredible ideas) will add fuel to the fire: yes ... you have such unusual, non-standard windows, but we will certainly come up with something special for them, just as unusual ... The overwhelming majority of people will trust the opinion of the pros, psychologists call this phenomenon conformism.

What can I say to all this. I don’t know why, I don’t know how it turns out, because often in advertisements with vacancies for a designer on curtains, special education is required, but the ideas and products of most "textile workshops" cause a minimum of bewilderment. Do they even follow the decorating trends even a little? At least a little. That swagi in Khrushchev, then lambrequins as wide as a thong, some kind of applique ... And with such a window, fantasy generally flies to heaven.

Perhaps you will take with you to consult some great photos, such as these.

But the result is likely to be something like the following. It's like with a middle-class hairdresser, when you carry an image of an actress as a sample, and the result is god knows what. Personally, I've had it 100 times.

Here are some full-size photos that were above in the skirnshots. I often have only one question - why complicate things so much?

Did you like anything? The examples are endless. 90% of arched windows are designed like this. One is worse than the other. By the way, does one of the curtains in the last photo remind me of three women's wigs? A sad result, despite not being the lowest budget. And why are they as short as women's pantaloons anyway? Stucco molding, crystal, marble window sills, a luxurious sofa and protruding plastic cornices (!!!). Where is the smiley face here?

Friends, you shouldn't disfigure your beautiful arched windows like that. Instead of becoming an interior decoration, they become its main bogeyman.

There are two main mistakes that lead to a sad result:

  1. The desire to repeat what they saw in the palaces on a low budget. The attempt is doomed to failure in advance. If the budget for one window does not exceed 150-200 thousand rubles, then do not even try to create something intricate, as in the title photo of the article. What hangs in Versailles is not sewn in the conventional textile salon of the Pupkin-curtains in Yaroslavl. These are completely different technologies and materials.
  2. A miscalculation in logic: a non-standard window necessarily requires a non-standard curtain. In fact, in the overwhelming majority of cases, the situation could be saved by the most ordinary straight curtains and straight cornice. Truly non-standard solutions do not have to be looked for very often, when the situation is simply hopeless.
