Door jalousie: wooden jalousie doors, horizontal jalousie in the doorway

Wooden shutter doors look great as a facade for wall cabinets, kitchen furniture and as interior doors. It is possible to make blind doors with your own hands, but you need to know the technology.

Louver doors are gaining popularity in modern designs. They are used in the production of furniture and are used as interior doors. The cost of such doors is quite high, so many are wondering whether it is possible to make such a door on their own. We will try to figure out how the shutter door is arranged, what advantages and disadvantages it has and how to make such a structure with our own hands.

Features of blinds and their varieties

It should be noted right away that the blinds are not full-fledged doors, that is, they cannot completely replace them. This is a type of partition. If you still want to use them as a door with all the functions, then you can combine it with a regular canvas, better glass.
Nowadays, louver designs are offered in various configurations, among which stand out:

  1. Vertical, which is a classic office type option. At the same time, the lamellas are located vertically, they can be shifted to the side using a special mechanism.

2. Horizontal - the same familiar design, which has long been popular for use on windows. If the lamellas are made of metal, then such blinds completely replace the door leaf.

3. String - blinds of thread type, which more perform a decorative function and protect from direct sunlight.

4. The accordion is an excellent design option for a doorway. They can be called an analogue of an accordion door, but with a smooth movement mechanism.

5. Roller shutters are also an ideal way out if a door needs to be replaced. They consist of horizontal elements that move along guides, so that you can easily fix the desired rise or completely close the blinds.

The interior doors with a jalousie effect stand out. They represent a frame, inside of which horizontally located lamellas are installed. They look very attractive and refresh the design. They fit especially harmoniously if the room is equipped with cabinets with doors of the same design. Such models are made from various materials, including polymers, wood, metal and others.

Louvered door history

Blinds in French means jealousy. This is a light-shielding structure consisting of plates, "cilia", the so-called lamellas, vertical or horizontal attachment order, movable and stationary. Window blinds are a relatively young idea and were patented in 1841 by John Hampton.

The shutter door is another matter, this idea has its roots in Ancient Greece. Clever Greeks used blinds in the openings of their houses, from there, this idea spread to the countries of the Ancient East, then the Roman Empire and Medieval Europe. As a rule, this experience was adopted by countries with a southern climate. This idea came to Russia quite recently, although something similar stood in the attics of the houses of peasants and noble gentlemen, in pre-revolutionary Russia, and was called a "dormer."

Vertical door blinds

This design has gained great popularity in the design of a doorway. The lamellas are arranged vertically and can be made from all available materials. Vertical blinds have a fairly simple design. The multifunctional mechanism ensures reliable control of the luminous flux. When you open the blinds, the slats are tightly close to each other.

Why are blinds instead of doors so popular?

In the interiors of both an apartment and a house, using blinds on the doorway can be a very interesting idea, which, among other things, has many advantages:

  • Light weight, thanks to which the structure does not burden the ceiling and wall ceilings.
  • Originality and uniqueness of appearance compared to conventional canvases.
  • Unobtrusiveness and freeing up space. They do not take up much space, and if necessary, they can be completely raised or completely dismantled without deteriorating the appearance of the opening.
  • The ability to zone a room by installing a structure in the form of a partition.

Door jalousie: wooden jalousie doors, horizontal jalousie in the doorway

But not in every interior there are blinds on doorways. Many are simply afraid to install them, since the designs have a list of disadvantages:

  • Low share of sound insulation. No blinds are capable of providing the same protection against external noise as ordinary door leaves. Moreover, even with the help of seals, it will be difficult to change the situation.
  • Less reliability. Over time, any model of the product, as well as its mechanisms, become unusable, lose not only their quality characteristics, but also their original appearance.
  • Difficult care. Sometimes it is quite difficult to clean the lamellas of dust and dirt, which cannot be said about an ordinary door that can be washed without difficulty.
  • The impossibility of protecting the premises. In some cases, a reliable structure is required that will protect the room from outside penetration. Blinds will not be able to perform such a function, with the exception of roller shutters, which can protect to some extent.

Important! It is worth remembering that blind doors will not look concise in every style of interior.

Step-by-step instruction

  1. A beam of 50 x 50 mm is sawn into two lengths equal to the height of the door.
  2. Then the bar is passed through a thickness gauge and cleaned with a grinder.
  3. On the racks, the jig is alternately fixed, and the grooves in the future door racks are sawn with a hand mill.
  4. Slats are made or ready-made strips with a width of 30 mm and a thickness equal to the width of the groove (8 mm) are taken.
  5. The longitudinal edges of the slats are rounded off with a grinder.
  6. The transverse elements of the door leaf strapping are made from the same timber 50 x 50 mm. The length of each of them is equal to the distance between the frame posts plus two dowel lengths. At their ends, using a router and a saw, they form rounded dowels.
  7. At the bottom and top of the racks, the grooves are cut out with a milling cutter for the dowels of the horizontal strapping bar.
  8. Slats and a cross bar are inserted into the grooves of the racks, and the dowels are lubricated with carpentry glue.
  9. The whole structure is tightened with clamps or belts.
  10. After a day, the screeds are removed.
  11. On the outer ends of the racks, grooves are cut out with a chisel for the hinges. If movable canvases are installed, then the components of the sliding system are attached to the door frame. In the case of the formation of fences in the form of shutters, rollers and guide paths are installed.
  12. All wood is coated with linseed oil and then painted. Otherwise, the wood is impregnated with wood stain and covered with furniture varnish.

In this example, the louver slats are positioned at an inclination of 45. This is not a dogma. The slope of the slats can be different, up to 15 vertically.

How can blinds fit into the room?

When placing blinds in a doorway, you should carefully consider the choice of the design of the canvas and its placement relative to other objects in the interior. So, depending on the location, the following options are highlighted:

  1. Constructions instead of interior doors and partitions. It is an excellent choice for rooms that do not require permanent insulation, such as a living room. A jalousie partition will help out when combining a kitchen and a living room or a toilet with a bath.
  2. Blinds on the balcony. Provided that the balcony room is completely insulated and glazed, you can install such a canvas as a decoration for a balcony doorway. At the same time, when the partition is raised, the space will increase, and in the room of the balcony it is quite possible to make an office or a small corner for rest.

Door jalousie: wooden jalousie doors, horizontal jalousie in the doorway

3. Louvered structures in the pantry. This option is the most common due to the fact that the blinds do not overload the interior and perfectly allow air to pass through, which allows you to create the right microclimate for things in the pantry.

4. Combination with a door. Often this combination is found for the design of the external entrance to shops and offices. In an apartment, this will not be very appropriate, unless the door leaf has glass inserts, and the blinds are a light structure.

Sizes and colors

Blinds are usually selected to fit the size of a standard interior door. If the doorways in the house are impressive or very small in size, and also have an original shape, then you can make a product to order.

Blinds are installed directly in the opening or on it. In the first case, it is important to correctly take measurements before ordering so that the partition fits perfectly inside.

As for the color performance of the door jalousie structures, there are no restrictions. Now manufacturers offer a lot of different shades of lamellas, among which it is easy to choose the right one in style and design.

For example, a room made in light shades requires the installation of a partition in the doorway of white, powdery, cream, pistachio or other calm tones. A modern interior involves the use of brighter colors.

To bring originality to the interior, you can install plain blinds with a pattern on them in the opening. Products that combine several colors look very attractive. You can choose white and peach, brown and beige, blue and lemon or green as the combined shades. Classic - black and white. A children's room can be decorated with multi-colored blinds with photo printing, for example, with cartoon characters or idols.

Features, pros and cons

The arrangement of an apartment consists not only in the purchase of new furniture and surface finishing, but also in the purchase of new doors. When you want something unusual, blinds can be installed instead. An unusual solution will decorate a modern interior, give it liveliness. It is important to bear in mind that blinds act only as partitions between rooms or are used for zoning. If you plan to replace the front doors with them, the products are combined with a regular canvas.

Door jalousie: wooden jalousie doors, horizontal jalousie in the doorway

What is the difference between blinds:

  • Original design. Door blinds have not yet received widespread use, and therefore they look unusual and attract attention. Manufacturers offer models in different colors, which makes it easy to match them to a specific interior.
  • Light weight. Lightness is one of the advantages of blinds. They weigh several times less than the door and do not load the openings. Thanks to this, they can be transported over any distance.
  • Possibility of zoning. Blinds, purchased instead of a door, allow you to divide the space into parts. Arrangement of functional areas is a suitable option for a studio apartment and large halls. For this purpose, you can specially create partitions to delimit the room.
  • Easy to install. Even a beginner can handle the installation of blinds. They have a clear design and do not require the use of specialized tools.
  • Functionality. The models are easy to fold and unfold. If necessary, the blinds can be removed or moved to a new place, and during operation it is possible to regulate the amount of light entering the room.

Door jalousie: wooden jalousie doors, horizontal jalousie in the doorway

Despite the large number of positive aspects, blinds have a number of disadvantages.

  • Products are not capable of providing sound insulation, therefore, everything that happens in the next room or area will be heard.
  • The service life and durability of products is several times lower than that of conventional doors. At the same time, replacing the blinds with new ones will not be difficult, therefore this operation is carried out every few years.
  • Models require constant care: the elements must be regularly wiped from dust.

Door jalousie: wooden jalousie doors, horizontal jalousie in the doorway

Blinds are not able to protect a room from penetration, therefore they are not used to replace entrance doors. To strengthen the products, metal roller shutters are used, which make the structure more durable. In addition, blinds are not suitable for every interior.

They will stand out from the design of a classic room, however, they will perfectly complement an Art Nouveau room.

Advantages and disadvantages

Before deciding on the installation of louvered doors in a particular room, you should thoroughly understand their positive sides and shortcomings inherent in the design. Otherwise, there is a risk of disappointment in the acquisition, installing such a door where it does not belong.

Venetian blind doors

The main advantage of a jalousie door is its ability not to interfere with air convection.

Therefore, in a room with a shutter door closed, the air will not become stale. Rooms with such doors are effectively ventilated. Also, the space between the lamellas allows heat to spread from room to room, so there is no effect when one of the rooms is clearly more humid or hotter than the others.

Other advantages of this type of door leaf are:

  • Less risk of waterlogging and swelling. The air passing between the plates carries away excess moisture, due to which the louvered door will swell less than a solid wood door. Condensation forms less on a metal door. All this extends the service life.
  • Less weight than a solid door. Thanks to this, there is less need for adjusting fittings.

Visually, jalousie doors look impressive and give the interior a feeling of spaciousness, full of air and light. However, the question here lies in the plane of tastes. Fans of classic interiors may not like this solution.

Louvered doors for dressing room

As is often the case, disadvantages are a continuation of advantages. There are also louvered doors:

  • Although the slats form an impenetrable barrier for prying eyes, such a door cannot boast of soundproofing qualities. Also, smells will pass through such a door. Therefore, this is not a suitable option for the kitchen, and even for the bedroom, such a decision is far from always justified.
  • The design of the louvered door is not robust.
  • Since it is difficult to manufacture a louvered door (you need to fit a large number of small elements to each other), this is one of the most expensive types of doors. Only solid canvases made of expensive wood can be more expensive.

Doors equipped with louvered slats are perfect for closets and dressing rooms. The ability to let air pass well helps to avoid the formation of musty air in such rooms. This type of door is also suitable for installation in technical rooms. And of course, wooden slats can decorate almost any furniture.

An interesting option is to install a roller shutter door in the bathroom, but here it is worth comparing the benefits and losses. On the one hand, good ventilation will prevent condensation water from forming. On the other hand, since the door allows air to pass through, it can get cold in the bathroom in winter.

Varieties

Blinds are used to separate rooms. Manufacturers offer several models of these accessories. First of all, they are divided into horizontal and vertical. The first are the most famous and widespread type of blinds. The elements are located parallel to the cover, open and close if necessary.

Door jalousie: wooden jalousie doors, horizontal jalousie in the doorway

Accessories placed vertically can reach the floor or end higher, the lamellas have different widths and are usually made of fabric.

Besides, products are divided into types depending on the function performed, design features and aesthetic characteristics:

  • Sliding. An original solution, referring to the Asian style in the interior. An option for those who value high functionality and practicality of products combined with an unusual design. They are installed directly on the doors and move to the side with them. Such blinds will look good on the balcony, in country houses.
  • Decorative. They play a purely aesthetic role. Lightweight blinds hardly protect the room from light, dust or dirt, however, they can be made in non-standard colors, decorated with patterns and small details. Suitable for installation on additional partitions in the room.
  • Foldable. A modern design idea, invented and implemented by German specialists. The blinds consist of a continuous sheet of fabric, on which folds are located parallel to each other. The model is durable and flexible, retains its original appearance for a long time. Blinds are suitable for interiors in which clear lines and strictly observed proportions dominate.
  • Harmonic. Vertical doorways joined by fabric or leather. They are assembled using a rail that runs from the top or bottom using special fasteners. The model is used as partitions or for cabinets, including built-in ones.
  • Blinds curtains. Lightness, variety of shades, unusual design - all these are the advantages of this model. Mostly they are installed on the balcony, because the accessories additionally serve to protect the room from bright sunlight. Blinds are made in rich colors, have compact dimensions and are easy to install.
  • Anti-vandal. Models are characterized by increased resistance to external mechanical stress. They are equipped with anti-burglary shutters, which serve to strengthen the structure. The models can be installed on doorways of any size, while the area is completely covered. In the event of an emergency, the shutters can be easily opened without interfering with the evacuation. The advantage of protective roller shutters is that they are completely invisible when raised.

Design decoration

Metal, wood, plastic doors with louvered grilles can be of various finishes. For example, wood products are coated with either a colorless composition (special varnish), emphasizing the texture of the wood, or with a special toning.

Blue Blinds Doors
Moreover, in the latter case, with the help of a properly selected facing agent, you can "give" the product any type of wood (from cherry to wenge). In addition, creating blinds doors with your own hands, structures can be given a patina effect: such products will be a highlight in the interior.

Door systems made of MDF are usually coated with various shades of enamel and finished with a top coat. Such products look original.

Plastic and metal door systems are presented on the market in a huge variety (white, yellow, green, etc.). It will not be difficult to choose a product in one color or another.

According to designers, it is better to install a blind door in rooms decorated in ethnic or Mediterranean style, as well as eco-style. In this case, the color design of the structure is the main criterion for choosing such a product.

For example, in an interior decorated in a classic style, doors with a golden brown coating will look amazing. And for the Mediterranean interior, the best solution will be snow-white blinds.

Materials (edit)

Accessories are made from different types of raw materials. The operational and external characteristics of products, their appearance and service life depend on this. It also affects the price, which depends on the specific brand. Types of blinds depending on the materials used:

  • Wooden.
  • Metallic.
  • Plastic.
  • Iron.
  • Glass.
  • Silicone.
  • Aluminum.

Wood accessories look original, suitable for interiors made in natural colors, minimalistic rooms. At the same time, the tree is susceptible to moisture and burns easily. Metal (iron, aluminum) blinds are durable and durable, however, they weigh a lot and are not suitable for classic rooms. Glass accessories will decorate ultra-modern interiors. To extend the service life, the blinds are covered with protective agents and impregnations that reduce the negative impact of the environment.

Door jalousie: wooden jalousie doors, horizontal jalousie in the doorway

Silicone models are a modern solution that looks unusual and conceptual. They additionally protect the room from dust and dirt particles, are lightweight and easy to transport. Such accessories can be transparent, only nominally playing the role of a door partition. At the same time, the model is perfect for zoning and visual delimitation of different parts of the room, at the same time creating the effect of the unity of space.

Choice

A whole variety of doors, various in purpose and modification, are hiding under the name "jalousie doors". It can be external protective metal doors, and internal wooden interior accordions, and partitions designed for room zoning.

Louvered doors for dressing room

To choose a suitable louvered door, you just need to decide on the required dimensions and appearance of the door. Most often, doors are sold ready-made, and all you need is to purchase the option you like and install. The choice of sizes is great. Most often, you can find the following options:

  • Width - 294, 394, 494, 594 mm.
  • Height - 606, 720, 993, 1100, 1700, 2013, 2422 mm.

Dimensions (edit)

The dimensions of the blinds are directly related to the width and height of the doorway. They can close it completely or not reach the floor, which is also taken into account when buying. Blinds of a rectangular size are considered standard, however, there are also square models. Sometimes blinds occupy only half of the doorway or have an unusual shape - it all depends on the design idea of the owner of the room. Production of accessories to order allows you to set any dimensions of products.

Popular colors

Blinds are made in a wide range of colors, which allows you to choose them for almost any interior:

  • White accessories are versatile and blend in perfectly with monochrome designs.
  • Well combined with other objects and blinds, made in sand and vanilla tones.
  • When choosing variegated models, special attention should be paid to color matching. Blinds should be in harmony with the basic shade of the room and not create a clutter effect.
  • Pastel-colored blinds will complement a bedroom or a bright kitchen. In this case, it is recommended to avoid sharp color transitions, decorating the entire room in a calm range.
  • Playing with contrasts is an option for an Art Nouveau room. Blinds can have a shade opposite to the wall covering, giving the room liveliness and dynamism.

In any of the above cases, take into account that the design should not contain more than 2-3 colors at a time.

Accommodation options in the interior

Door blinds act as a partition, limit both rooms and zones. Depending on the installation location, accessories of different widths and lengths are chosen, and this also affects the functions they perform. So, blinds can play a purely decorative role or hide part of the room from prying eyes.

Where are the door blinds installed:

  • In the doorway.
  • On a balcony door with a window.
  • As interior doors.
  • Into the pantry.
  • To the toilet.
  • To the dressing room.

The most common option remains the installation in the doorway - the solution is practical and functional. When installing blinds between rooms, reinforced roller shutters are not required, any materials will do.

When placing accessories in the closet or closet, care should be taken to ensure that they are durable and visually protect the person or objects located inside.

How to install?

Do-it-yourself installation of door blinds. First of all, you should decide on the type of installation of accessories. The most common type is external. In this case, the box with the roller blade is located above the doorway, and the tires are on the side of it. Built-in installation implies the installation of fasteners inside the niche, and for the combined one you will need a special groove in the upper part.

Door jalousie: wooden jalousie doors, horizontal jalousie in the doorway

Steps for installing door blinds:

  • Before installing the blinds, check the accessory.
  • Every 40-50 cm, marks are made, after which holes are drilled there for fasteners.
  • The outer surface of the strip is drilled.
  • The structure is aligned horizontally and vertically using a building level.
  • Places for through drilling of parts are marked; there they will be attached to the wall.
  • The puncher drills holes that reach the drive.
  • The control mechanism and assembled roller shutters are installed.
  • Final fasteners for roller shutters.

At the last stage, the final finishing of the blinds is carried out. Dirt, construction dust is removed, accessories and decorative plugs are installed. If necessary, seams are sealed, seams are waterproofed. Special impregnations will protect accessories from rotting and ice formation.

Hinge selection

And in the case of using louvered facades, and as doors to the dressing room, furniture hinges are used to fix them.

They are of 3 types:

  1. Overhead (without cutting a special groove in the frame of the door itself and the box; the parts are screwed into the structure using self-tapping screws).
  2. Mortise (here it is necessary to make a corresponding recess in the frame and the box, and then put the hinge plate into it, fixing it with self-tapping screws. The resulting gaps can be covered with a special wood putty made of acrylic of the desired color).
  3. Hidden hinges (they are universal and invisible, they are installed on both the right and left sides, they are reliable and have a long service life).

Currently, a wide variety of hinges are available in door and hardware stores. For example, forged "antique" or stainless steel. The main advantages of steel hinges are their durability, mechanical strength, color stability, and no corrosion. Due to the fact that many colors of door leaves prevail in the interiors, the creation of colored hinges was also required. They are covered with special enamels and compositions of all kinds of colors: gold, bronze, chrome, zinc and so on.

Venetian blinds in Moscow

Such cabinet models are relevant both in modern and classic interiors. Blinds have been used as a decorative element hundreds of years ago. For traditional interiors, a swing cabinet with louvered facades would be an excellent solution, for modern interiors - sliding wardrobes with guides.

Custom-made louver wardrobes will be an excellent decor element. Thanks to competent filling, the presence of bars, shelves, drawers and other functional elements, it will be possible to properly organize the storage of things and keep them in excellent condition.

A white wardrobe with jalousie facades will be an elegant addition to the Provence, English or classic style. Thanks to its atypical design, it will become a decoration, a highlight of any interior, emphasize the individuality and impeccable taste of the home owner.

Today, in many hardware stores, you can easily purchase doors made of wooden blinds of any size. When choosing wooden structures, you need to pay attention to the ideal geometry of the product, the absence of knots, the canvas should be dense, without cracks and no bends of lines.

  • Butter;
  • Varnishing;
  • Paint (with a film or repeating the texture of wood);
  • Decoupage;
  • Inlay (for professionals, because it is a complex type of decoration, which brings uniqueness to each thing).

All irregularities must be eliminated before starting painting with your own hands. All materials used for finishing wooden shutter doors should preferably be made from water-based compounds. This will allow you to create with your own hands in comfortable conditions, where there are no unpleasant odors and the material itself dries faster.

Without a doubt, jalousie wooden doors will always look great and remain in demand as a decoration for an apartment or house for many years. And what about the option of a plumbing door with louvered grilles on a rotary mechanism? Or a pendulum in a bar-restaurant, on spring hinges. Mandatory in the house as an interfloor structure, improves ventilation of the premises. Having processed the product with yacht varnish, it can be safely used on the street, as a second entrance or shutters on the windows.

Design features

Types of louvered wooden doors and their features
As a rule, lattice doors made of wood are installed to delimit space, create privacy, block access to noise and odors. However, blinds have another important function - they allow you to regulate the flow of light into the room. The blinds can be opened, and then the light from one room will fall into another, or, for example, close the doors, if you do not want prying eyes from the next room to watch you.

Wooden louvered doors are produced according to the same principle as conventional standard swing or sliding structures. It's just that instead of a blank canvas, an element with strips is inserted into the frame, which can be movable or blind (in the open state). Pine and other conifers are the most commonly used materials for the production of louvered doors.

When choosing jalousie doors, give preference to models with wide slats. This feature is a guarantee of strength and resistance to deformation. A glued wood product will serve you much longer than a solid one.

Lattice wooden doors can be used for both residential areas such as bedrooms and offices. You can often see such designs in the boss's office. If necessary, he can close the doors during meetings, and if necessary, open them to observe the wards.

Solid wood louver wardrobes

Solid wood cabinets occupy a separate niche in the furniture industry. Of course, you need to pay more for such furniture, and this is an option for those who are not ready to sacrifice health and comfort for the sake of saving. Today, even the younger generation is interested in the content of harmful substances in chipboard, whether it is worth talking about the fragility of such structures.

A kind of know-how, among other models, are the solid wood louver wardrobes. These are modern and eco-friendly products that provide comfortable storage and optimal ventilation, at the same time serving as a decorative element.

  • Design. The structure of the louvered facades is a solid frame, between which thin strips are fixed. All components are made of solid beech, oak and other durable wood species.

Possible opening methods

Louvered wardrobes, produced by the furniture factory "Mobius", can be with different opening systems:

  1. Swing. The traditional and most demanded version. The leaves can occupy the entire height of the structure or can be divided into several small ones. So a swing cabinet can contain many sections adapted for storing various wardrobe items.
  2. Folding doors. The leaves move along a special rail, neatly gathering to the sides in an accordion manner. An excellent option for small-sized premises, no free space is required to open swing-type doors.
  3. Coupe. Combines high style and functionality. The flaps slide along guides for convenient use of all internal compartments.
