Folding door-book: reviews, photos, manufacturing and installation instructions; what are folding book doors made of, and how to make them yourself

The modern furniture industry produces doors of various designs. One of the options is a fold-out door. This model consists of two doors that fold in half when it is opened.

Such folding doors are absolutely indispensable for apartments with narrow openings. They are of two types: freewheel and hinged. The door of the book, the installation of which is not at all complicated, can be installed even by a person who does not have experience and skill. This design may differ in some details, but in general, common elements are present without exception.

Features of the design of the door-book

The foldable "book" does not require additional space for opening. Due to their shape in the form of 2 or 4 leaves connected to each other, the panels move freely to the sides when opened, without taking up space. They can be installed where there would be no place for a swing model.

There are several features of the mechanism:

  1. Installation of a folding door does not require installation of a threshold.
  2. It can be mounted on either side, and with a wide opening on both sides at once.
  3. It is not necessary to open the structure completely, partial opening is allowed.
  4. The roller suspension mechanism is used.
  5. Special hardware required.
  6. The low level of light, heat, sound insulation allows you to use the model for arranging interior openings.

Folding door features

Folding interior door
Unlike swing doors, the book does not need any space to open. Its canvas is divided into 2-4 doors connected to each other, which allows you to move the door towards the jamb. The area of the leaf extending beyond the door frame is reduced by 2-4 times, which allows you to install a book-door where there would be no room for a swing door.

Other advantages of the design include the following:

  • allows you to do without installing the threshold;
  • the door can be installed on both the left and right jamb, and in a wide opening - from 2 sides at once;
  • if desired, you can use only part of the sash (this is convenient in wide openings), and if necessary, open the opening completely;
  • in modern construction, it is possible to use a suspension mechanism on rollers.

The roller mechanism made it possible to manufacture doors from heavy glass doors or precious woods, which immediately attracted the attention of owners of luxury housing. The folding door's resemblance to a fashionable screen has made it popular with interior designers.

The disadvantages of such doors include:

  • low heat and sound insulation;
  • unreliability of the door due to its special structure;
  • the use of special fittings.

The lightness of the folding structure, the absence of a threshold and the presence of several doors mean a large number of slots and gaps. This reduces the performance of the product, so the installation of the book is possible only in interior openings.

Equipment

  1. Sash panels. The quantity depends on the type of product. Made of MDF or PVC. Plastic panels are more practical and more durable in operation.
  2. Required hardware for securing the sashes and assembling the complete structure.
  3. Videos.
  4. Stops.
  5. The required profile in the form of an upper rail and two side ones.
  6. Fittings (rails, supports, hinges, handles, seals, clamps, clamps).
  7. Assembly instructions.

The specified completing is represented by a minimum set of components. Each mechanism assumes a certain number of items in a specific set.

If you plan to install a book-door with your own hands, you need to take care of the availability of the necessary tools.

Instructions for installing "accordion"

Do-it-yourself door installation is not very difficult.

It is important to make careful measurements of the doorway at several points before purchasing it. If it is less than 1 m, the lower guide is not needed, only the upper

With some trim levels, the purchase does not include platbands and accessories - you should take care of this in the store.

3.1

Standard structural elements

All folding door models have the same elements and components in their device. Namely:

  • door leaf in the form of separate leaves - their size in aggregate must match the opening;
  • from 1 to 2 horizontal guide rails;
  • hinges for connection and from 2 to 4 carriage rollers;
  • adjusting key;
  • stoppers;
  • hinges;
  • self-tapping screws.

3.2

Door features

In order to better understand the installation and assembly of folding doors, it is necessary to thoroughly study their design. The main sliding element is the guide rail. Its installation is carried out at the top of the doorway. If the same rail is additionally installed at the bottom, the service life of the structure will be significantly reduced. This happens as a result of the accumulation of debris in the guide. It will not be possible to remove it regularly, since the width of the product is very narrow.

For easy movement of the flaps, a roller mechanism is used. It is fixed on one side on the canvas, and on the other in the groove of the rails.

To ensure that all parts are securely fastened, hinges and awnings are used. Additionally, all the doors are connected to each other with hinges slightly less than the fastening ones. In some models, the sashes are connected with clips.

The guide rail is always made of metal. To decorate it, use veneer, laminate or varnish. If an unscrupulous manufacturer offers a product made of a different material, the device will fail after a couple of months of operation. The number of flaps can be different - from 2 or more pieces.

3.3

Required tools

In order to assemble and mount the door structure, you will need tools:

  • drill;
  • polyurethane foam;
  • plumb line;
  • building level;
  • hacksaw;
  • bars;
  • roulette;
  • miter box.

If you plan to expand the doorways, you will have to additionally acquire a puncher.

3.4

Assembly instructions

In order not to get confused in the panel doors, they are first laid out on the floor in the required order. Followed by following the step-by-step instructions for installation:

  1. 1. Assembly of plates into a single whole. The fastening method differs slightly depending on the model.
  2. 2. Vertical installation of side strips. In this case, be sure to use the level. They are rigidly fixed.
  3. 3. Installation of guides. If the size does not match, cut to the required size with a hacksaw for metal. A distance of 25-30 cm is determined between the holes.
  4. 4. Installation of panels. On the one hand, a latch complements the guide profile, and the end of the panel and the roller are brought onto it. Fix the guides.
  5. 5. Creation of holes in the panels for the installation of fastening hinges in them when assembling the door leaf. The lamellas are placed in the required sequence (the first and the last can be marked). The distance between them is 3-4 mm. Check the fasteners again.
  6. 6. Installation of the canvas. All flaps are assembled with an accordion and placed in the grooves of the guide rail. A final check is made and their position is adjusted with an adjusting key.
  7. 7. Installation of platbands. Cut off the excess with a hacksaw, attach them to liquid or furniture nails.In the latter case, the insertion points are painted over with a special pencil of a suitable color scheme.

Preparing the doorway

After purchasing the kit, you need to start work with the preparation of the doorway. For this, the old door is dismantled. It is necessary to remove the old drywall or mortar to the surface of the wall so that there are no difficulties in installing the new box. After the completion of the dismantling, measurements of the opening are made. This is necessary in order to determine whether it is necessary to reduce or increase the opening for the acquired structure.

Attention. The doorway prepared for installation must be flat along the entire perimeter. The error in the upper overlap is allowed, but not more than 5 mm. This is determined by the level. The sides must be strictly parallel to each other and of the same thickness throughout the entire height - without narrowing or widening.

The new door frame is assembled from purchased accessories. You can buy them in the official stores of the manufacturer that manufactures fabrics and accessories. In the upper corner, the upper crossbar is fixed with self-tapping screws. The assembled box is inserted into the opening. Complements are fixed with anchors. A box in the shape of the letter "P" is installed in the opening, fixed with anchor bolts and foam. When working, it is worth using a level to avoid distortions of the box. After complete drying of the foam, proceed to the next stage of work.

How to install a retractable hinged accordion correctly?

"Accordion" is a great option for both office space and apartments. They are relatively inexpensive and, like any other compartment door, are associated with compactness.

The "base" for these products are arrays of various types of trees, but the disadvantage of such doors is that they are very difficult. Plastic doors are a "substitute" for accordion doors from arrays.

Minus - "flimsy" design.

Plus - the price of the product.

For work, first of all, you need to prepare the doorway properly - undoubtedly, you can mount the accordion door in an existing door frame, however, such a step can significantly reduce the width of the existing opening.

It would be advisable, nevertheless, to remove the old door and box, and remove all the grout under it to concrete or brick (the material from which your house is built). And then only, it is necessary to measure the opening, and check it with the nominal dimensions of the door with a different number of components.

These dimensions are written in the document for the door. Consider only the width of the extensions. As a result, you figure out what to do with the opening: expand or, on the contrary, narrow it with the help of construction foam, extensions and beams.

Prepared additions are first cut off to make a box without sills. Then they drill holes with a two-millimeter drill, in place of the self-tapping screws, and put self-tapping screws, attach the crossbar at the top, where the vertical extensions are located.

At the end of the construction of the box, it must be inserted into the opening using beams. To attach extensions to the wall, use long anchor bolts - 3 jokes on the left and right, and 2-3 at the top.

We take the polyurethane foam and foam the segment between the wall and the wall, wait until it hardens. And later we start installing the door itself.

As with installing any sliding door, you need to start with the rails. Such a profile is already included with the door. It is necessary to measure the selected length of the profile, and cut off the excess.

You also need to cut off the profile of the blind area and the place on the side of the door handle. It is necessary to check all dimensions, leaning the profile, but without setting them. Then you need to make holes in the profiles of 3 mm, and in the upper profile you need to make holes with a distance of about 6 cm, and on the side ones - about 16-17 cm.

If the profile is fastened with special clips, then proceed with their installation over the entire required area of the door.At the top you should have about 7 clips, and on the sides 4-5.

We start assembling the door leaf. It should be remembered that all strips must be the same in height, and during installation it is necessary to leave a gap at the bottom of about 10 mm - for ventilation.

How to assemble this type of door is usually written in the passport to it. If your future door is plastic, then the panels in it are connected using grooves or using additional spacers.

At the end of the connection of all components, it is necessary to assemble and fix all the fittings. It remains only to install the assembled door in the opening.

To do this, the door must be attached with rollers to the guide profile, then folded and positioned in the center of the profile, thus it is easier to install the guide in the doorway.

If you use clips, then the guide is attached to them. Then you need to start installing the side profiles. The ease of movement of the door and the tightness of its fit to the counter profile from the side of the handle is checked.

If this is all right, you need to secure the handle. While the door is closed, the location of the lock is noted on the other side, and a latch with a magnet is attached to this place.

When everything is ready, the platbands are fixed.

The excess part is cut off with a hacksaw at an acute angle. You can fix them with liquid or special nails with invisible heads. The installation of the accordion door is ready.

Book door

Residents of small apartments do not need to be told about the cramped living space, narrow corridors and the impossibility of two people missing each other in the aisle.

Surely swing doors that open to the entire corridor have more than once become a source of bumps and abrasions for households.

Therefore, it is quite natural that sooner or later the owners think about a more rational use of square meters. And the door-book becomes just such a lifesaver.

Correct installation steps

When performing self-assembly and installation of the book-door, the sequence of installation steps should be followed. After preparing the opening, the canvas is assembled. A step-by-step description of the process will help you do everything right.

Installation of the suspended structure of the book-door

A canvas is attached to the box. The folding direction is determined in advance. It is recommended to use 3 sets of hinges in the installation so that the mechanism can withstand the weight of the canvases. In work, it is necessary to correctly embed the loops into the canvas so that the gap between the extensions and the canvas is uniform. If the conditions are not met, a skew may appear, which threatens deformation and subsequent repair.

Installation of hanging fittings

Sliding fittings:

  1. Aluminum rail.
  2. Carriage with rollers.
  3. Roller guide, with which the carriage with rollers is attached to the door.
  4. Self-tapping screws.
  5. Limiters.

The books use a standard sliding system for moving panels. At the top is an aluminum rail with a built-in carriage slot and moving rollers. The work is done using a level. This is necessary for the rail to attach horizontally without distortion. The roller carriage must move freely and easily inside. Limiters are built in along the edges of the rail, which do not allow the canvas to hit when sliding. The next step is to set up a roller guide to one of the canvases. The roller carriage and guide are held together.

Installers insist on lubricating the mechanism with oil after assembly is complete. This will make the ride smooth and protect the structure from corrosion.

Installation of additional fittings

The doors are used daily and are subject to increased stress, therefore, the installation of strong fittings is required. These are special fixators, locks, handles.

For "books" it is recommended to install the handles built into the canvas. This option does not damage the adjacent door panel when folded.The handle, which protrudes and is installed in a narrow opening, is traumatic for people passing by.

Step-by-step instructions for assembling accordion doors

It is not difficult to assemble and install accordion doors. They are accompanied by fasteners and spare parts. Manufacturers necessarily add spare stripes to expensive models in case the door has to be extended. The installation process itself consists of the following steps:

  1. Preparation of tools and materials. You should have at hand: a percussion drill, tape measure, puncher, level, plumb line, hacksaw, miter box, corner, wooden blocks, mounting foam, extras, platbands.
  2. Opening preparation. It is not necessary to remove the existing box, but it is better to get rid of it anyway. it reduces the doorway.
  3. Formation of a box without a threshold after dismantling the door and cleaning the surfaces of the opening from the solution. At the same time, the upper bar is fixed, attaching it with the end side to the top of the vertical extensions and securing with self-tapping screws.
  4. Installation of the box. It is inserted into the doorway and secured with wedges. Reliable fastening is provided by bars of the same width as the opening. Spacers are made of them in the center and at the bottom, if this is not done, then the extensions will bend. The extensions themselves are attached to the wall using long anchors. Ideal layout: 2 on top and 3 on the sides. The operation ends with foaming the gap between the wall and the addons.
  5. Installation of the guide profile. First, measure the required length, cut off the excess using a miter box. The dimensions are checked by applying the profile, but not fixing it. Holes with a diameter of 3 mm are drilled in those places of the profile where self-tapping screws will be screwed at a distance of 50-70 mm on the upper profile, and on the side ones - 150-200 mm. If the profile is attached to clips, then the latter are mounted along the perimeter of the opening. At the same time, larger rails are used for the profile and rails, and smaller ones from the side of the finishing groove and magnetic lock.
  6. Assembling the door. The slats that make up the door leaf are adjusted in height, taking into account the margin for the roller system inserted into the guide rail and the lower ventilation gap. The door itself is assembled according to the instructions attached to it.
  7. Installation of rollers. After the complete assembly of the canvas, place the rollers and other accessories included in the kit. All work is carried out in strict compliance with each paragraph of the instructions.
  8. Final installation. The rollers of the assembled door leaf are inserted into the guide profile. Then, for the convenience of mounting the guide, the door is folded, placed in the middle of the profile. When clips are used, the guide is simply snapped onto them. If the use of self-tapping screws is envisaged for fastening, then first the rail is fixed along the edges and along the entire length, then the profiles are fixed on the sides, and then the blind link of the "accordion" is fixed to the profile.
  9. Checking the movement of the door and the tightness of pressing it to the otvetka from the side where the handle will be. If there are no comments, the handle is installed, then the door is closed, the location of the lock answer is noted and the magnetic latch is screwed on.
  10. The final stage. Finally, platbands are installed around the perimeter. To do this, cut off the excess at an angle of 450. To fix the platbands, use countersunk head nails or liquid nails.

Advice. When screwing in self-tapping screws, material damage often occurs. To avoid this, first make the holes using a smaller drill and then install the fasteners.

Accordion doors are a wonderful alternative to swing doors. They not only save space, but can also become a highlight of the interior.

Useful tips for door installation

Door books belong to folding models, but have slight differences. Installation of the "book" requires a different number of guides and a method of installing panels. When using two guides, installation difficulties arise. "Book" is highly reliable and durable.

When installing the door, care and accuracy are required. The door needs a tight fit.

With a loose fit and when installed out of level, creaking or distortions appear during operation, which leads to breakdowns. Doors do not close completely or tightly, do not open well.

Opening preparation and floor leveling play an important role in installation and further operation. With proper installation, the mechanism works silently, smoothly. For long-term operation, careful attitude to the structure is required. Do not bump or open doors abruptly.

It is worth using high-quality fittings from trusted manufacturers, which ensure well-coordinated work and a long service life of the entire structure. Everything you need can be supplied by the door manufacturer or by the supplier of specialized fittings.

Correct installation of the bookcase door, following the instructions and installation steps, ensures the reliable operation of the structure and is a simple process. You should not rush, observe accuracy and precision in measurements. A book-door correctly installed with your own hands will last for many years, save space and decorate the interior with an attractive appearance.

Do-it-yourself book door

A book-door is a sliding design of an interior door, consisting of two or four canvases, folding like a book. Doors of this type help not only to save space, but also to emphasize the features of the interior of the room. For folding doors, lightweight material is most often used, since the classic design is suspended. But, if the canvases are heavy, for example, made of natural wood or tempered glass, the floor system of rollers is additionally mounted. In this case, the integrity of the floor covering is violated.

Pros of a hanging book-door

  1. This method of delimiting a room helps to save space. The folding door does not require floor space to open, as is the case with conventional swing doors. The leaves are located in the doorway and do not clutter it.
  2. If the structure is suspended, then the floor covering remains intact; also, for this door, the installation of a threshold is not required.
  3. The door opens smoothly from any push, cannot hit or press a person. The structure can be installed in apartments where small children live.
  4. The folding door structure can be installed in any opening in width, optionally with right-hand or left-hand opening.
  5. Suspended reinforced roller mechanism is characterized by long-term performance and capabilities.

Cons of a suspended structure

  1. Heavy canvases decorated with glass or other expensive decorative inserts require careful handling. Also, without fail, the suspended structure must be equipped with closers that protect the canvases from impacts against each other.

Features, advantages and types

When installing such solutions, you can save a lot of space in the apartment - the doors do not swing open outward, respectively, they do not form a large opening area. Book doors may not appeal to haters of trains and buses, but they are great for people without stereotypes.

As a rule, the type of construction is made in the form of an accordion, or a book. Both types work like blinds. From a technical point of view, the folding door of the book consists of panels fixed vertically, interconnected by means of a mechanism that provides translational (one after the other) movement of the panels. The mechanism works due to the guides along which the panels move. Opening and closing the door of the book with the correct setting is smooth and silent.

There is also a type of door such as an accordion. Its design can provide for six leaves, which are a screen, and the installation of such doors is justified only for wide doorways. Such doors do not have any unambiguous advantages, and their price is significantly higher than that of folding doors of books. In addition, the accordion should always be oiled and cleaned of dirt, as it is very capricious to use.

Book doors are a completely different matter. Since such devices have only two canvases, the mechanism is considered very simple and straightforward. The appearance is quite interesting and subjectively better than that of "accordions", and the low price attracts the attention of potential buyers.

Folding doors are produced in various designs - two-section and four-section. The design features of the listed options are insignificant.In the first case, the doors are opened by simultaneously folding and unfolding two sections, which are identical to each other, both in length and width.

The second option is distinguished by the presence of additional sections, the folding principle of which is similar to the first, but the door itself allows you to cover a large opening width. By reducing the width of the sections in four-section solutions, a significant amount of living space can be saved.

What type of door to choose depends on the size of the door opening. If the width of the opening is not more than 1.5 -1.7 m, the installation of a two-section door will be justified. With a larger width, you should think about installing a four-section option.

For high-quality work of folding doors of books, it is necessary to choose the correct and reliable guides. The book door is a simple mechanism, because the number of guides varies from one to two.

If there are four leaves, then two guides are required - an upper and a lower one. If there are two flaps, only the upper guide may be enough, however, in order to avoid skewing of the structure, you can think about a second guide.

The choice of the required option depends on the accuracy of the consumer and the frequency of using the sliding structure. If it will not be used often, you can save on more complex mechanisms and accessories.

How to make canvases for a book door with your own hands

First you need to decide on the material. It is impractical to use heavy natural wood or large sheets of tempered glass for a folding structure. The material is quite heavy, which over time will negatively affect the performance of the harness.

You can order ready-made canvases from MDF or make them yourself.

It is best to use a panel structure for the manufacture of interior door panels. This will require the following material:

  • wooden bars (25 by 25 mm);
  • dowels;
  • PVA glue;
  • HDF panels.

A frame for the future canvas is mounted from the bars, depending on its size. The bars are cut into blanks of the required size and fastened together with dowels coated with glue. It is advisable to arrange the bars not only along the edges of the canvas, but also to form stiffeners from them inside the door.

HDF panels (3 or 4 mm thick) - sheet thin material with one smooth surface, made by hot pressing sawdust. This material is cut into pieces that have the dimensions of a door leaf. Then the panels are attached to the timber sheathing. The draft version of the door leaf is ready. It can be painted, laminated, veneered, depending on individual preferences.

You can also make door leaves from MDF panels covered with veneer or other material. This is the simplest solution - you need to choose the material that is optimal in color and thickness and cut it into canvases of equal size. Experts recommend using MDF with a thickness of 22-25 mm.

The edges of the doors can be processed in two ways: by gluing special paper with an iron or using ready-made plastic edges that are fitted onto the ends of the panels in tension. The latter option is distinguished by its strength and durability, since the pasted paper after a while can simply fall off, spoiling the appearance of the door.

For a book-door, two canvases of the same size are made and fastened together with hinges. In order for the structure to be strong and reliable, it is recommended to attach 3 sets of hinges: at the top, bottom and in the middle of the canvas. The resulting structure folds and unfolds like a regular book.

Installation of the suspended structure of the book-door

Installation of the suspended structure of the book-door

Materials that are needed for mounting a book-door.

  1. MDF panels (20 - 25 mm thick)
  2. Platbands.
  3. Fastening accessories for add-ons and platbands.
  4. Bars made of wood.
  5. Polyurethane foam.

Aluminum folding door systems

Tools for assembly work.

  1. Perforator.
  2. Jigsaw.
  3. Screwdriver.
  4. Roulette.
  5. Level.
  6. Saw on wood.
  7. Miter box.
  8. Pencil.

The first thing to do is to prepare the doorway for installation work. For this, the old door frame is removed. Then it is required to align the slopes and mount the extensions - planks that hide concrete openings and act as a door frame.

The width and length of the extensions depends on the size of the doorway. The necessary parts are cut out of the MDF panels using an electric jigsaw and fastened together with dowels in the form of the letter P. Then the resulting U-shaped structure is inserted into the doorway and drilled with anchors. When installing add-ons, it is recommended to use a level, the fastening fittings should be drilled at the same distance, which will help to avoid distortions of the door frame.

Sliding door mechanism

In order for the extensions to hold firmly, it is required to foam the gaps between the MDF panels and the wall. In the future, the foam and the edges of the add-ons will be hidden by the platbands, which will refine the look of the doorway.

After installing the add-ons, it is required to attach the door leaf to the frame, having previously selected the side into which the door structure will be folded. It is advisable to use 3 sets of hinges, which are designed for high loads and can easily support the weight of folding canvases. With this procedure, it is important to correctly sink the hinges into the door leaf so that the gap between the extensions and the door leaf remains equal. Otherwise, the entire structure can be skewed and deformed, which will quickly lead to repair.

What do you need to work?

Plywood sheets
At home, it is difficult to process thick tempered glass for door panels or solid wood. Most often, a lightweight structure is assembled from the most affordable materials:

  • bar 2.5 cm thick;
  • additional elements and platbands for the door frame (it is better to buy ready-made decorative parts);
  • plywood 0.5 cm thick or fiberboard;
  • loops (card, piano);
  • accessories and decorative finishes (plywood, films, etc.).

It is very convenient to use ready-made MDF panels as a door leaf. They can be ordered from a furniture store or a construction company. This material can be cut on site to the dimensions provided and glued to the cut with PVC or foil edging. Unusually delicate and beautiful doors are obtained from HDF perforated panels. If you wish, you can combine materials, making only the upper half of the sash openwork, and taking the lower half with ordinary fiberboard.

To work, you need to prepare the tools:

  • jigsaw or hand saw;
  • perforator and anchor;
  • chisel and hammer;
  • drill with a thin drill and a screwdriver attachment;
  • self-tapping screws or furniture dowel;
  • emery cloth;
  • polyurethane foam;
  • joiner's glue.

It is not recommended to drive nails into a thin block. Connections should be made only with dowels or self-tapping screws. The last type of fastener must be screwed into pre-prepared holes with a diameter slightly less than the thickness of the self-tapping screw.

Installation of hanging fittings

Fittings for the sliding mechanism.

  1. Aluminum rail.
  2. Carriage with rollers.
  3. Roller guide, with which the roller carriage is attached to the door.
  4. Self-tapping screws.
  5. Limiters that prevent the door leaf from hitting the wall.

An aluminum rail cuts into the upper part of the box, in which a groove for a carriage with rollers is located. This must be done with a level, carefully making sure that the rail is attached to the box strictly horizontally. The roller carriage should slide smoothly inside the groove without interference. Then, restraints are attached to the edges of the aluminum rail, which protect the door leaves from hitting the wall.

The last step is to attach the roller guide to one of the door leaves. Then the carriage with rollers and the guide are connected.

Experts recommend that after assembly, thoroughly coat the entire system with lithol, which will improve the movement of the mechanism and protect it from corrosion.

If the door leaves are made of heavy material, experts recommend additionally equipping the structure with a floor roller system.

An aluminum rail is mounted in the floor, a carriage with rollers is inserted into it, which is attached to the bottom of the door leaf through a roller guide. Also, this system is equipped with anti-dust brushes that prevent the collection of dust in the rail along which the carriage moves.

The disadvantages of the double roller system are the sinking of the aluminum profile into the floor covering, which harms its integrity.

Pros - high operational capabilities, less wear of fittings, durability of the entire system.

Hardware elements

Like any other interior door, a folding structure consists of many important elements. You should know that the durability, correctness and ease of operation of the door directly depend on the quality of the fittings. That is why it is important to carefully select and monitor all details of the structure in order to avoid serious damage.

The number of names of components that are fittings in folding doors is greater than in swing products due to the complexity of the design. So the elements of the door fittings for books and accordions include:

  • Guide rail;
  • Roller mechanisms;
  • Seals;
  • Loop mechanisms;
  • Pens;
  • Clamps and clamps.

Some of the details in the form of hinges and handles are similar to the mechanisms of swing systems. Other elements are strictly individual products used in sliding doors.

Guide rail

The guide rail is made of a U-shaped bent aluminum profile and is cut to the required length during installation. The number of gutters directly depends on the type of installed system. For folding doors, a profile with one groove is used.

In the process of selecting and installing the guide rail, it is necessary to strictly control the absence of defects on the product, as well as the compliance of the device position with the horizontal level. Any deviation will lead to problems in the operation of the entire door. So the product can start to open or close spontaneously. It is also possible for the roller mechanisms to get stuck while in motion.

In the case of a system with two guides, the main load is applied to the rail located at the bottom. In this case, the upper profile serves to ensure the vertical structure of the folding doors.

Roller mechanisms

The main requirements for roller mechanisms are to ensure silent sliding and smooth movement of the flaps. These indicators are achieved through the use of various rims, put on the wheels. Currently, headbands are:

  • Rubber;
  • Teflon;
  • Plastic;
  • Made from hardened composite material;
  • Steel.

In the production process, special bearings are used that are protected from dust particles and foreign objects. The mechanism itself is quite simple and can be either paired or asymmetric. Paired products are mounted in closed profiles, and asymmetric ones - in open ones. At the time of purchase, the roller mechanisms are fully equipped with all the necessary components, including fasteners.

Seals

The main purpose of the sealing elements in sliding doors is to ensure that the sashes fit tightly to the frame.In addition, the seals provide protection against drafts and help maintain the indoor climate.

The material for the sealing strips is rubber, rubber or silicone. Rubber is a top priority material due to its high elasticity and wear resistance. Silicone is most commonly used in glass products. In such designs, it provides not only a tight fit of the parts, but also protects the sash from damage at the locations of the fasteners.

Loop mechanisms

In the process of assembling the leaves of a book-door or an accordion, card-type mortise hinge mechanisms are most often used. For their installation, grooves the size of the thickness of the hinge plate are hewn out in the end part of all canvases. After that, the parts are fixed with self-tapping screws.

It should not be forgotten that the mechanism consists of a plate with a recess and a counter half with a pin. All notched parts must be placed on the same end piece. The counter plates are attached to the end of the second blade.

After placing all the elements and assembling the structure together, all the sashes should be located at the same height. To ensure correct assembly, it is recommended to initially hook all the doors together without using self-tapping screws and mark the position of all parts separately.

Pens

In most cases, in folding doors, such an element as a door handle is practically not used. This provides some reduction in the cost of construction. A profile frame is used as a support for opening and closing. Most often, such a system is used in cabinet doors. However, if there is a profile with a small thickness, a special mount is placed on the door, which allows you to mount absolutely any handles.

In the case of equipping the canvas with a lock or latches based on magnets, a full-fledged handle is installed. In this case, the product is not only a support for the hands, but also actively contributes to the opening of the flaps. Accessories in the form of handles are also necessary for folding doors in the absence of side profiles in the accordion and book design.

The most popular type of handle when using magnetic latches is mortise. Such products have many advantages, including ergonomics and ease of use. In addition, the part has a high level of safety, since it does not protrude beyond the level of the leaf and, in the event of a collision with the sash, protects against injury.

Clips and clamps

Clamps and latches are inherently necessary in folding doors to ensure the durability of the structure, since they are a kind of limiters for the travel of the extreme fixed sash. It is they who ensure the integrity of the sashes, as well as the pieces of furniture and walls adjacent to the door.

The most commonly used are magnetic catches and door stops. The limiter does not fix the sashes, but only does not allow them to move beyond the set place. A latch with a magnet mounted inside is placed in the zone of the planned stop of the web. In this case, a metal washer is installed on the door. During the opening process, the magnetized washer is fixed and does not allow the door to open further.

Installation of additional fittings

Since the door between rooms is used quite often, reliable and convenient fittings are needed: handles, locks, latches.

Experts recommend using handles recessed into the canvas in doors of this type, which, when the system is folded, will not damage the wall or the adjacent door leaf. It is also worth considering that the protruding handle can injure a person passing through the doorway. This is especially true in cases where the opening is rather narrow.

Folding accordion door consists of three guides: top (1c), and two side - left (1a) and right (1b), as well as two half-panels, left and right (3), main panels (5) and elements for connecting the panels to each other : connecting hinge (4), docking rail (2), locking panel (6). The door leaf runs along the upper guide using sliders (7) and is fixed with stoppers (8). The guide rails are attached to the opening with self-tapping screws (11). The door is closed using the handle on the lock panel (9) and the latch (10), which is attached to the right side rail

Closers used to smoothly close door leaves are appropriate only in cases where the structure is rather large and the doors are often opened and closed.

Choice of design

Types of structures

So that there are no problems when installing the accordion door, and it harmoniously fit into the opening and in the interior of the room, it is necessary to make the right choice of the model.

To do this, you should adhere to some recommendations:

  • You need to purchase an accordion door in accordance with the interior of the room, taking into account the technical features of adjacent rooms.
  • Do not install an accordion door in an opening 0.5 meters wide. In the open position, it will be difficult to move from one room to another.
  • Correctly you need to calculate the number of canvases required for a particular interior opening.
  • It is not worth saving when buying a product, who does not know that a miser pays twice. In cheap models, in the production they use low quality plastic and fragile fittings that do not withstand large and frequent loads.

Standard kit (option):

  • guides (1 or 2);
  • connecting hinges and carriage rollers (2 or 4 pcs.);
  • panels;
  • accessories and an adjusting key.

It is necessary to pay attention to the number of panels and their width. Together they must completely cover the doorway.

In addition, the correspondence of the names and the number of fasteners. Otherwise, the installation will take a long time.

What you need to pay attention to when making a do-it-yourself book door

  1. It is not recommended to install such a design of doors to a bathroom or toilet. The folding system has low sound and heat saving properties. Light, moisture and odor can penetrate through the gaps in the floor and the gaps between the sheets.
  2. If the doorway is too wide, it is recommended to consider the left-side and right-side design of folding doors. This will reduce the load on the harness and make it easier to open and close the canvases.
  3. For heavy-weight canvases, it is optimal to use a reinforced suspension system that can withstand maximum loads, if there is no desire to mount an additional floor rail.

Do-it-yourself book door: installation technology (video)

Today the time has come when the question of the functionality of the living space has come to the fore. Apartment owners have to constantly measure up to a centimeter of living space in order to comfortably install furniture and make their home more comfortable. To save space, the best option would be to install an interior door in the form of a book. This is a very practical, effective interior design in a small space. Over the years, clothes change, hairstyles become different. The fashion for the door is changing just as much. In recent years, folding door frames have become very popular. Such unusual and rather comfortable models are suitable for a variety of rooms. They have many advantages when compared to a conventional swing door.

A folding door can have either two leaves or a whole structure of folding leaves.

How to make a door-book with your own hands? Is it possible to carry out its installation without the help of masters at home?

The modern industry produces doors of a wide variety of designs. The book has two flaps that fold in half when it is opened. This design is a lifesaver for apartments in which doorways have minimal dimensions. Folding doors have free movement or are hinged.

Door mounting is not a complex technological process. Its installation can be performed by a person without certain construction skills and experience. Such designs may differ slightly in design options, but each has the same elements that are mandatory.

When is it convenient to use a door-book

This product is an excellent alternative to the swing design. It has flaps that slide along metal guides. The folding folding door is compact in size. Due to this characteristic, it is used in the arrangement of small rooms (dressing rooms, narrow corridors, bathroom and kitchen).

Advantages and disadvantages

In addition to saving room space, the interior design has the following advantages:

  • practicality (some models open from 2 sides);
  • low cost (compared to analogues);
  • ease of installation work;
  • silent operation (suitable for any room).

With the help of a book, the room can be divided into zones. This option of doors in the kitchen is especially acceptable, where it is necessary to highlight the working and dining areas.

Design nuances, production techniques

Folding door element diagram.

The standard version of this book is considered to be a door with two canvases. There are doors, the number of leaves of which is much greater. This is due to the requirements of functionality and the personal desires of the owner. Asymmetric division of doors is considered to be one of the varieties of the book-door. This model looks very impressive and practical.

The main advantage of the book is the ability to modulate the space. A variety of color solutions using a variety of materials make it possible to harmoniously fit the door into the interior of the apartment. The original design is realized by selecting the desired model.

Easy installation is considered an additional positive quality of the book. To install a leaf in a door frame, you do not need special carpentry skills. You just need to read the instructions and follow its instructions. The folding door can be installed even when the installation of a swing door is generally not possible. You can independently install a folding door in the narrowest corridor. Sometimes this design becomes an internal partition.

Diagram of the folding door mechanism

The most famous folding structures are:

The second type includes two canvases of the same size, folding during opening.

Folding doors are made from a wide variety of materials:

  • Chipboard;
  • wood;
  • plastic;
  • glass, which is framed by a metal frame.

Combinations of wood with other materials look impressive. The industry uses leather, stained glass, and more. Before installing the door, it is necessary to choose the right material and future design of the structure.

The technology of self-installation and installation of a book-door

The scheme of fastening the roller mechanism to the aluminum rail.

The device of this interior door is quite simple. The door of the book is fixed on one side of the door block, for which they use supports or ordinary standard hinges.

The most practical is the installation of a book using door hinges. The door leaf will fit snugly against the timber block.

For self-installation, the door leaf is first assembled.Each section must be assembled strictly in the required sequence.

Awnings are hung on the door leaf. The hinges are fixed to the door block. In order for the door to experience an even load, four hinges must be installed. This door will last a long time, it will be strong and reliable.

If you do not use hinges, then for installation you will need to fix the aluminum guide rail at the top and bottom. For this design to work for a long time, it is recommended to use special rollers with bearings. In order for the sliding of the rollers to be smooth, the rails must be coated with machine oil.

Assembly diagram of a door leaf from two leaves.

The final operation of the installation is the fastening of the aluminum bus. This rail will be a kind of guide to which rollers and additional accessories are attached:

For added security, you can also install an additional rail. All operations are performed in the following sequence:

  • the tire is cut to the desired size, fixed with screws;
  • rollers are installed;
  • the tire is fastened to the block and the floor.

The door handle must be fastened 90 cm above the floor.

For additional fixing of the door, a mortise lock is installed.

A variety of materials are used in the manufacture of book doors. The pine covering has become the most demanded and popular due to its low cost. The wood panel has a beautiful light pattern that stands out with dark spots. The negative side was its softness. The hardness of pine is quite low. A blow with a sharp object can dent and ruin the beauty of the door. The most expensive and more wear-resistant panels are:

The door frame must strictly correspond to the folding structure, otherwise the sashes will not fit snugly against the frame and a gap will form.

The appearance of such doors is more beautiful and original. Artificial materials, such as chipboard, are much cheaper. However, their operating time is much shorter. The toxicity of such materials often does not meet environmental requirements.

In the production of doors, glass of various types has become very often used:

Glasses are installed in wooden slats. This frame is the most expensive. To complete the work, you will need the following tools:

From different materials

Folding accordion doors, like book doors, can be made from different materials. Let's take a look at them in the photo galleries below.

Natural wood accordion door

Natural wood. A durable material, subject to its competent processing: the wood is impregnated with an antiseptic, covered with stain and varnish. Over time, the coating is renewed. A door made of this material is not resistant to moisture changes.

Folding door made of MDF

MDF. The most resistant material, not susceptible to the destructive effects of mold and mildew. Compared to chipboard, the material is more suitable for the manufacture of complex doors. Chipboard is strong enough, lightweight, environmentally friendly, moisture resistant and fireproof.

Chipboard accordion door

Chipboard. Cheap, as it is a sheet of glued sawdust. A door made of such material will turn out to be flimsy. Since it consists of sawdust pressed and glued together, the screws do not hold very tightly in it. The advantage of the material is good heat and sound insulation, however, the design of the accordion door does not allow the material to show these qualities in full. Chipboard also has high moisture resistance and biostability, but still it is far from the best option for folding doors.

Folding door made of plastic

Plastic. Cheap, wear-resistant and water-resistant material. Ideal for shower stalls. Easy to process, does not chip, scratch or crack, does not dry out. For interior doors, plastic with a pattern is usually used: under a tree, to match the color of the walls, etc.

So, let's say you've prepared the doorway, installed the rail, and are ready to install the door leaf. Well, then let's not wait, let's start installing right now!

First, check if everything corresponds to the required size, if yes, then great. You need to install rollers on the door leaf - the main part of the moving mechanism, by the way, here is another difference between a folding interior accordion door and a sliding compartment door: the rollers are located on it not vertically, but horizontally, relative to the ground, so they move along the walls of the guide, in addition, respectively, the rotating axis is directed in the other direction, and, in addition, the rollers also have a swivel roller unit, it is needed so that the door can was to fold. Otherwise, the steps are the same as for installing a sliding door, that is, to the upper end of the door leaf, one roller is installed in two parts. After the rollers are installed, you need to install the lower axle, on which one part of the door leaf will be attached. Now you can insert the rollers into the guide.

What you need to do for this:

Do you remember that the guide needed to be fixed, for now, with only one screw, which had to be placed in the center of the doorway? So, now, due to such an unstable fastening, you need to unfold the guide and, when folded, install the door leaf on it, then the guide unfolds together with the door leaf, one extreme part of which is fixed on the lower axis. Well, that's all, now all that remains is to fix the aluminum rail with a few more screws, and lubricate it for better sliding of the rollers. Your sliding door is ready, you can safely use it!

Here's another thing, I told you how important it is to prepare the doorway and that it is best to do it with a false box, this model is the clearest proof of my words, just look at this broken doorway!
