Glass doors: detailed installation instructions

Glass door manufacturing technology

The door leaf for home and public interiors is made of tempered glass (7 times stronger than usual) or triplex. These are two or more sheets glued together with a film (between them you can lay fabric, apply UV printing, etc.). This design becomes even more shock-resistant - it is extremely problematic to break it, but if this happens, fragments from both sides hang on the film and have blunt edges.

The glass door can be made from sheet of different thickness, usually from 8 to 12 mm. The canvas has a perfectly smooth surface without bubbles and optical defects.

Floor guide

To prevent the door from vibrating relative to the plane of the opening, a special plastic guide must be attached to the floor at its very edge. If the door closes to the left, then the guide is mounted at the right edge of the opening and vice versa. This part is attached with self-tapping screws. If the floor is covered, for example, with a laminate, then even a regular screwdriver is suitable for installation. If the floor is concrete and uncoated, you will have to drill holes for the dowels.

Varieties of glass doors

The door leaf is a part of the structure, which is of two types: frame (has a box) and frameless (all-glass). It also matters how the door will open. There are several of the most popular systems on the market, which are radically different from each other. To understand how to install a glass door of one type or another, we will consider the principle of operation of each option.

Hinged glass doors in a box

This is a traditional system in which the door leaf opens in one direction only. Fastening is carried out on hinges to the box. The box can be made of wood or aluminum.

Glass sliding (sliding) doors

They work on the principle of a sliding wardrobe: sliding on a roller mechanism allows the sash to roll back left and right. The guide is usually attached at the top, but with a large weight of the blade, double-sided fastening is also possible. This is an ergonomic solution that helps to zone the space, and saves space in small rooms. In stores, automatic sliding structures are often installed that roll back on a signal from a motion sensor.

Radial glass doors

They have a spectacular appearance and are often used in designer interiors. Their zest is in an unusual shape: curved glass is used in concave or convex versions. The overall look of the design is futuristic and elegant.

Pendulum glass doors

The main advantage of the system is that the structure opens both inward and outward, which is very convenient. It is advisable to install an interior glass pendulum door for large rooms, so that both in front of it and behind it there is enough free space. But the format of the interior is unimportant - it is suitable for both home and commercial buildings.

Rotary glass doors

The structure moves simultaneously around its axis and moves forward. The opening radius is reduced, saving space, and the system swings open in both directions. Otherwise, these doors are called bar doors, because they are often used in establishments of this kind.

Scope of glass doors

Glass entrance structures, especially all-glass ones, symbolize openness and at the same time speak eloquently about status. Because of these two qualities, they are ordered to commercial premises. Marketers conducted research on focus groups and deduced a pattern: from two neighboring stores, customers more often go to the place where the door is made of glass. People subconsciously interpret establishments with such an interior as more attractive. If you cite the results of the survey word for word, then the survey participants said that the owners of such a business "have nothing to hide." That is why glass structures are so often chosen by banks, investment and insurance companies, trade enterprises, the hotel sector, entertainment centers, cafes.
In a home interior, an interior glass door is a way to make a design individual, reflect the owner's taste, his values, and a look at architectural aesthetics. They visually increase the free space of small rooms, add the missing volume to the room, make it airy, uncluttered. In large apartments and cottages, it makes sense to install an interior glass door for the sake of neat zoning. Glass allows you to subtly delimit rooms with interiors of different styles or create the effect of a single space. In the halls, it gives rise to the feeling of a palace scale and huge squares (even if this is not the case in squares).

The decision to install a glass door to the steam room of public and private baths and saunas is quite justified. They are in harmony with wood, perceived as a natural material. In addition, they allow you to notice in time if the hover becomes ill.

And, of course, the most fashionable trend of recent years dictates the need to install a glass door to the shower room. For 3-4 years now, all major world architectural and design exhibitions have been focusing on this method of bathroom decoration.

Sliding glass structures

Installing a sliding glass door will help to avoid many troubles in the future, for example, blocking the entrance to other rooms, taking away a significant part of the space or injuring a person passing by. The elegant design of these glass openings will add modernity and elegance to the interior of your apartment, and in a larger room, the sliding glass structure will look even more spectacular.

Typically these systems use affordable but stylish glass. It looks great with wooden frames. On such glasses, you can make drawings or relief images.

For sliding door structures, such mechanisms are used, which include guides with rollers, and a glass sheet is attached to them. This device is made of thick profiles, and the rollers are made of abrasion-resistant polymer. The bearings allow the doors to open smoothly and easily.

Before placing sliding doors, it is imperative to take into account the following nuances: in the room you need to have a place so that the shutters can hide; correctly calculate the size of the opening; reinforce the openings, as the glass itself is very heavy.

The nuances of installing glass doors: what experts advise

  • If you make a mistake in the size of the product, you will have to order a new one. The finished hardened blade cannot be adjusted in height or width under the opening. A simple thing follows from this: you need to use the services of a professional measurer.
  • You can install both a wooden box and a metal mounting system - both look spectacular with glass.
  • It is necessary to choose the opening system and design of the structure before the repair is made. How to decorate the doorway will depend on this.
  • A three-millimeter gap is required between the box and the door leaf.
  • For buildings with high traffic of visitors, we recommend to mount the swing door on two types of fastening: upper and lower. This design has the greatest wear resistance.

Preparing for installation

Before starting work on the installation of a single-leaf sliding door, it is necessary to unpack the corresponding set of fittings, prepare the tools and cut the aluminum profile-rail into size (inside which the roller mechanism will be located). With the help of a level, a section is marked out above the opening for attaching the profile.

Glass doors for baths, saunas and steam rooms: installation features

Today, most of the owners of the steam room prefer to install a glass door in it. Swing models are best suited for baths, saunas and steam rooms. When mounting them, the hinges must be fixed so that the canvas opens outward, and not inward. Otherwise, you can accidentally touch the heated glass of a steaming person.

Sliding systems are not suitable for the bath, they do not provide complete tightness: the steam will leave, the energy consumption of the room will decrease. There is moisture in the Russian steam room, so it is better not to put the door in an ordinary wooden box - it can swell and increase in size. A frame made of specially treated heat-hardened hardwood is preferable.

This requirement is optional for a Finnish dry steam sauna. But there is another nuance: the principle of its operation is based on constant convection, therefore, during installation, a threshold is not set - a gap of 1-2 cm is left between the floor and the door leaf.

In the Russian steam room, on the contrary, unscheduled air exchange is useless, and in order to prevent it, an inflated sill is traditionally installed so that cold air does not stretch across the floor.

Recommendations for buying glass door designs in the steam room

When buying door blocks with glass inserts for a bath, first of all, you need to pay attention to the thickness of the glass sheet. It should not be less than 7 mm so that the glass does not break from the slightest accidental hit by any object.

Steam room door options

It is also necessary to pay attention to the material from which the door frame is made. It should be made of hardwood. It is not recommended to buy coniferous doors to the bathhouse. Under the influence of a sufficiently high temperature in the steam room, resin will be released from the wood, accidentally touching which can damage the skin.

Sauna door fittings

It is also important to pay attention to the material of manufacture of door fittings. It should not get very hot so as not to burn the body. And in the door structure there should be no gaps through which heat will escape from the steam room.

Features of installing a glass door in a shower room

Tempered glass is moisture resistant, easily tolerates temperature changes, is not a favorable breeding ground for mold fungi and bacteria, divides space with minimal loss of area. Therefore, it is excellently assessed as a material for a shower partition.

Before installing a glass door in a shower room, there are a few things to remember.

  • The design does not need a box.
  • With a non-standard opening, the canvas is made to order for the desired size. Another option is to mount an additional fixed glass panel on part of the empty space. A movable screen will adjoin it.
  • The hinges are fixed to an adjacent partition or wall. Depending on the choice, glass-to-glass or wall-to-glass hinges are used.
  • If the wall is not solid, embedded elements are installed to support the weight of the structure.
  • The slope for water on the floor is made on the side opposite to the doorway in order to achieve greater tightness.
  • Instead of a threshold, they put a side, from above it is glued with a seal or silicone. This will prevent accumulated water from spilling over the room.
  • The flap end fits more tightly if you use magnetic seals between the door and the fixed leaf. The fixed abutments of glass and walls are coated with silicone.

Eliminate transparency

This question usually repels the client. Based on this, we decided to dwell in more detail on the methods of eliminating the shortcoming. There are a couple of ways to do this, anyone can find the one that suits him.

  • The plane can be sandblasted, which will make the surface matte;
  • If you paint, then there is an opportunity to apply your talent and apply a unique pattern using waterproof paints;
  • There are many films available in retail, which come in many colors and shades;
  • Some people use a body made of one material, and then it is filled with glass inserts of different colors. It will also not be a bad decision.

Mount by yourself or order the service of professionals?

Crafted men will be able to put the door structure themselves. However, when it comes to an expensive system and good repairs, it is not recommended to do the installation on your own. In our experience (and we have been working in this area for many years), in 90% of cases, the result does not reach the desired level, including due to the lack of a professional tool. Often we are asked to re-do our own work - it is longer, more expensive and more problematic than installing from scratch.

What are the difficulties?

  • Tempered glass, and even more so double triplex, have sufficient weight. You cannot install them alone.
  • On recoil models, it is quite difficult to set the guides and roller mechanisms so that the sliding remains easy for a long time. Usually, failures appear after 3-4 months, which prematurely wears out even high-quality fittings.
  • Rotary doors have the most complex opening system, as they move simultaneously in two planes. Engineering knowledge and installation skills are required to calculate the correct trajectory.
  • Not everyone knows how to install a glass door to a bath. But it depends on it whether a pocket for a "steam cake" will be formed in a heated room. This is the most saturated half-meter layer of steam under the ceiling, from where the bather scoops up the "reserve" with a broom if necessary. In order for it to form above the lintel, and not over the head of seated people, it is necessary to correctly correlate the height of the door leaf and the threshold.
  • In a sauna, the main difficulty is to calculate the geometry of the entire structure, including the hinges, the curtain and the box, so that it is not "led".
  • And in the shower, unprofessional installation most often leads to the fact that water splashes seep onto the floor through the screen.

Installation of the swing model

Before installing the doors on the shower stall, you need to study the instructions from the manufacturer, check the equipment, the integrity of the mechanisms and fittings. You need to start work with the preparation of hand and power tools, consumables.

Tools and consumables

For the installation of door partitions you will need:

  • tape measure, spirit or laser level;
  • electric drill;
  • drills measuring 4.76 and 5.55 mm;
  • diamond core bit 4.76 mm for decorating holes in tiles;
  • screws for tiles;
  • dowels;
  • a hammer;
  • adhesive tape;
  • marker for marking;
  • silicone sealant.

After preparing the tool and consumables, you can proceed with the installation of the sashes.

Installation process

The installation of swing structures is carried out in strict sequence. The quality of the work will largely depend on the tightness of the system and the ease of its operation.

Algorithm of actions:

  1. Assembling the metal frame, checking the vertical posts using a horizontal level.
  2. Drawing of markings for the holes for fixing the frame. The marks must be accurate, their subsequent correction is problematic.
  3. Drilling holes in the wall. It should be noted that the tiles are fragile. In order not to damage the cladding during the drilling process, you should work with the utmost care. To reduce the risk of tile breakage at the initial stages, the number of revolutions of the drill is reduced to a minimum.
  4. Installation of plastic dowels in drilled holes.
  5. Application of sealant on the edges of the frame in contact with the wall. After that, the frame base is installed in the designated place and fastened with screws.
  6. Installation of side panels and hinges, door hanging. The installed flaps should hinge outwards on the left or right side.

The last stage is the application of a sealing compound for plumbing in the places where the guides touch the walls. The glue should dry - this will take at least 24 hours. It is not recommended to use a shower during this time.

Features of the operation of glass doors

Correct installation makes operation easy and hassle-free. Difficulties can arise when:

  • the use of low-quality fittings;
  • too heavy weight of the door leaf for the selected guides or hinges;
  • natural shrinkage of the building.

Glass does not age, does not lose its original properties, and does not need to be replaced during cosmetic repairs. It will have to be reinstalled only after the design has become obsolete.

Caring for it is simple: in residential premises, the surface is wiped with a glass cleaner and a soft cloth as it gets dirty. If you decide to install a glass door in the shower, order it to be treated with water-repellent compounds so that limescale from the tap water does not settle on the glass and does not have to be washed after each use of water procedures.

How to care for the door and regulate its operation?

Installation of glass doors - do it yourself or call a master

Any doors periodically need to be adjusted, because over time, the canvas can be slightly skewed. In this case, you need to tighten or loosen the screws on the hinges. For this, a special hexagon is sold with them. By turning the screws to one side or the other, the sash can be brought closer to the box or removed, and its vertical position can be adjusted.

Skewing can occur for a number of reasons.:

  • the building gradually shrinks;
  • the sash is too heavy, the sheds have been chosen that do not correspond to its weight;
  • the hardware is incorrectly installed;
  • products of low quality, they quickly wore out.

Glass doors are good for everyone, but fingerprints are very easy on them. Especially if there are kids in the house. The canvas itself can be washed by any means that do not contain abrasive particles. Dust from the fittings should be removed with a soft cloth, guides in sliding systems will help to clean the vacuum cleaner.

If the hinges begin to creak, then they need to be lubricated with grease or purchase a spray for metal fittings. Surplus funds should always be removed after processing. In the case when even small cracks appear on the canvas, then such a door must be dismantled immediately. Otherwise, the smallest cotton will cause splits on the glass.

Installing a glass door is not much more difficult than installing plastic or wood products. You just need to take into account that the glass sheet cannot be adjusted, even minimal miscalculations are fraught with the fact that the door will not fit. Each type of system has its own characteristics when installed. Installation work should be carried out according to the instructions carefully so as not to scratch the glass surface.
